Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) led a quartet that scored in double figures with a game-high 19 points, as Corban's women's basketball team dropped the opening game of the Kim Evanger Raney Classic to Lewis-Clark State, 84-76, Friday inside the Sherwood Center.
In the opening game of the annual classic on the campus of Whitman College, Corban took on the Warriors of Lewis-Clark State looking for its second straight win against the NAIA Division I team from Idaho.
After an opening three-pointer by LCSC's Kim Preston in the game's opening 30 seconds, sophomore
Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) and Steigleman converted back-to-back buckets over a span of 57 seconds to give the Warriors its first lead of the game (4-3) with 18:38 remaining in the first half. Over the next four minutes and 11 seconds, Corban used a 10-7 run to grab its largest lead of the game (14-10) following a Steigleman jumper with 14:27 left in the opening half. Lewis-Clark State would then use a 31-11 run over the next 11 minutes and four seconds to grab its largest lead of the opening half (41-25) with just over three minutes left in the first half. Kailey Bostwick's
(Medford, Ore.) jumper with 48 seconds left to close out the Warriors' first half scoring.
In the second half, Corban pulled to within four points (58-54) via an opening 21-10 run over the first seven-plus minutes following a jumper by freshman
Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.) with 12:43 left in the game. Lewis-Clark State would then use a 5-0 run that was highlighted by a three-pointer and lay-up by Nikki DePeel to grab a nine-point advantage (63-54) with just over 11 minutes remaining. Corban then used a 6-0 run of its own that was highlighted by a pair of free throws by Bostwick and back-to-back jumpers by Steigleman and Buhler to pull within three points (63-60) with 9:37 showing on the clock. The Salem-based Warriors would continue to apply the pressure via a 12-9 run to grab its final lead of the game (72-71) after a Buhler three-pointer with 4:40 remaining in the contest. Corban would loss the lead (74-72) following an old fashion three-point play by LCSC's Sadie Short with just over three minutes remaining in the game. Ashley Connell (Spokane, Wash.) brought the Warriors within a single bucket (76-74) via a lay-up with 2:17 showing on the game clock. LCSC's Reiter would push the lead back to four points (78-74) via another lay-in with 109 seconds remaining before Miller would bring Corban back within two points (78-76) via a jumper with 1:42 left. Jasmine Stohr would extend Lewis-Clark State's lead back to four points (80-76) with 1:25 remaining before Corban missed a jumper and then began fouling over the game's final minute, which allowed Lewis-Clark State to close out the game on a 6-0 run that included a game-closing three unanswered free throws by Alyssa Fierro for the final margin of eight points (84-76).
Along with Steigleman's point and rebounding performances, Buhler, Miller, and junior
Monique Tribble (Coquille, Ore.) added 14, 11, and 10 points respectively. Steigleman was aided on the boards by Buhler and Tribble, who each pulled down five rebounds to go along with Bostwick's game-high tying six assists.
Lewis-Clark State was led by Preston and DePeel, who each tallied 18 points to go along with Short and Stohr's 15 and 13-point performances respectively. Short pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, while Fierro registered five boards and Reiter handed out a game-high tying six assists.
As a team, the Warriors shot 29-for-55 (52.7%) from the field that included 6-for-15 (40.0%) from beyond the three-point line and 12-for-17 (70.6%) from the free throw line. On the other hand, Lewis-Clark State was 31-for-67 (46.3%) from the field to go along with an 8-for-20 (40.0%) performance from beyond the arc and a 14-for-21 (66.7%) showing at the free throw line.
With the loss, Corban falls to 2-3 overall, while Lewis-Clark State improves to 5-3 overall this season. The Warriors return to the floor on Saturday, November 29th, when they conclude the Kim Evanger Raney Classic against classic-host Whitman beginning at 6:00 p.m. inside the Sherwood Center.
