Bostwick Leads Warriors to Victory Over Beacons of Northwest Christian

BOX SCORE

EUGENE, Ore.
– Senior Kailey Bostwick (Medford, Ore.) scored a game-high 22 points on 8-for-16 shooting from the field to go along with a pair of 11-point performances by freshman Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) and junior Monique Tribble (Coquille, Ore.), as Corban's women's basketball team captured a much-needed 59-54 victory over Northwest Christian Saturday afternoon inside the Morse Event Center.

This afternoon's games were moved up four hours due to the weather forecast for the Willamette Valley, as both schools wanted to get the double header in without having to reschedule for mid-January.

"I was pleased with how we played," commented tenth-year head coach Terry Williams.  "I think that the key to today's victory was how well our post players played against the Beacons' two forwards, as well as Kailey's performance in the second half.  This win will help us as we progress through the remainder of the conference season."

In the opening half, the visiting Warriors jumped out to a quick four-point lead (4-0) after the game's opening four minutes and 12 seconds following a jumper by Tribble with 15:48 showing on the clock.  Corban would increase its lead to double figures (18-6) thanks to a jumper by freshman Joani Reimer (Ferndale, Wash.) with 9:48 remaining in the opening half before the host Beacons would begin to claw their way back.  Over the final nine-plus minutes, Northwest Christian used a 15-11 run to get within the half time margin of six points (27-21) following back-to-back free throws by McKenzie Gambee.

To open the second half, Northwest Christian used a 14-9 run to pull within a mere point (36-35) thanks to a Emily Gray three-pointer with 14:45 left in the contest.  Corban would quickly push its lead back to double figures (46-35) thanks to a 10-0 run over a span of two minutes and 42 seconds, as Bostwick capped off the run with a three-pointer with 12:03 remaining.  The host Beacons would pull back within a mere bucket (46-43) thanks to an 8-0 run over the span of 60 seconds, as Kelsey Bolander and Gray each hit a three-pointer to go along with Calie McVicker's jumper in the lane with 11:03 left.  The Warriors would then use a run of its own to pull ahead by seven points (50-43), as Tribble connected on a jumper with just over eight minutes showing on the clock.  Northwest Christian would never get closer than the final margin of five points (59-54), as Bostwick hit three free throws down the stretch to give her 15 second half points and ice the game for the Warriors.

Along with the combined scoring output of Bostwick, Steigleman, and Tribble, only three other Warriors -- Reimer, sophomore Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.), and freshman Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.) -- added points.  Reimer turned in an eight-point, five-rebound performance, while Miller added four points and Buhler connected on one of Corban's four three-point field goals for her only points of the afternoon.  Steigleman pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds en route to registering the Warriors' only double-double, while Tribble and Reimer added seven and five boards respectively.

Northwest Christian was led by Gray's 17 points and a game-high 19 rebounds, while Gambee added 16 points and 11 rebounds in the losing effort.  Five other Beacons scored in the game, as McVicker and Elise Gray added seven and five points respectively.

As a team, Corban shot 22-for-65 (33.8%) from the field that included a 4-for-18 (22.2%) performance from beyond the three-point line and an 11-for-18 (61.1%) showing at the free throw line.  Meanwhile, Northwest Christian was 16-for-58 (27.6%) from the field that included a dismal 5-for-29 (17.2%) shooting in the first half.  The host Beacons were 6-for-19 (31.6%) from beyond the arc, while shooting 16-for-22 (72.7%) at the free throw line.

With the win, Corban evens its record at 5-5 overall and 2-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.  Meanwhile, Northwest Christian falls to 4-8 overall that includes a winless performance in conference action at 0-4.  The Warriors are back in action on Tuesday, December 30th, when they travel north to Forest Grove to take on the Boxers of Pacific University of Oregon beginning at 7:00 p.m.
