EUGENE, Ore. – After posting a season-high in kills twenty-four hours ago, sophomore Teri Braun (Dallas, Ore.) recorded a new season-high and team-best 12 kills in Corban's women's volleyball team's four-set victory, 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 25-16), over Northwest Christian Saturday inside the Morse Event Center.
After taking a mini-one match break from Cascade Collegiate Conference play, Corban returned to CCC action tonight against second-year conference member Northwest Christian riding a three-match winning streak against the Beacons.
In the opening set, Corban jumped out an 8-4 lead following a kill by Braun and then continued to extend its lead to as much as six points (23-17) after a kill by senior Rashelle Davenport (Kalama, Wash.). Another kill by Davenport and a Beacon hitting error handed Corban the opening set by five points (25-20) and an early 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, Northwest Christian took an early four-point lead (6-2) following a kill by Cotie Howard. Using its never-say-die attitude, Corban battled back and knotted the set at 7-all via a 5-1 lead that was capitalized by a Davenport kill. Another kill by Braun and a kill from freshman Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.) gave the visiting Warriors a two-point lead (9-7) before Northwest Christian used a 4-2 run to tie the set at 11-11. Over the next sixteen points, neither team held more than a two-point lead before Land registered back-to-back kills that gave Corban a 21-19 lead. Three kills by NCU's Brooke Stribling over the next six points knotted the set once again at 23-all before Howard ended the second set with back-to-back kills to give Northwest Christian the set by two points (25-23) en route to tying the match at one-set apiece.
In the third set, Corban rode the serving arm of Davenport and a trio of kills by senior Chelsea Reeher (Powell Butte, Ore.) to an early 6-1 lead. The Warriors continued to apply pressure and extended their lead to as much as six points (18-12) following another kill by Braun. Over the set's final eleven points, Corban used a 7-4 run that was highlighted by kills from Braun, Reeher, and senior Rachel Gowen (Oregon City, Ore.) to go along with a quartet of Beacon hitting errors to give the Warriors the third set by nine points (25-16) and a 2-1 lead in sets.
In the fourth and final set, Corban jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead before Northwest Christian used a 4-1 run to pull back within a mere point (7-6). A Land kill sparked a 6-1 run by the Warriors, who took a 13-7 lead before Northwest Christian climbed back within three points (13-10) via a mini 3-0 run. With the score 18-14 in favor of Corban, the Warriors used a 5-0 run highlighted by a pair of Land kills to grab a 22-15 lead. A 3-1 run ended the match for Corban with Gowen and freshman Megan Dees (Tehachapi, Calif.) registering the Warriors' eighth and final block of the match for a match-ending margin of nine points (25-16) and a four-set Corban victory.
Along with Braun, Davenport and Land added 11 kills each to go along with Gowen's 10. Dees handed out a match-high 27 assists, while junior Amy Thompson (Oregon City, Ore.) aided the Warrior offense with 16 assists. Davenport helped anchor the Warriors' back line with a match-high 24 digs, while sophomore and reigning CCC Libero of the Week Rebecca Franke (Pendleton, Ore.) and Reeher added 16 and 11 digs respectively. At the net, Braun registered a match-high four blocks (1 solo, 3 assist) to go along with Gowen's three (2 solo, 1 assist) and Dees' three (all assist).
Northwest Christian was led by Stribling's match-high 16 kills, while Howard and Cassie Bishop added 12 and 5 kills respectively. Whitney Hoff handed out a team-high 20 assists to go along with Alex Jee's 17, while Stribling and Mercedes LeClaire anchored the Beacons' back line with a team-best 15 digs each.
With the victory, Corban improves to 5-4 overall, 3-1 in conference play. Meanwhile, Northwest Christian falls to 3-6 overall, 0-4 in conference action. The Warriors return to action on Friday, September 19th, when they travel south to Klamath Falls to take on the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Danny Miles Court.
