Clay Martin (Beaverton, Ore.) led the Warriors with 18 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field, but Corban's men's basketball team comeback fell short against the Raiders of Southern Oregon, 75-73, Saturday night inside McNeal Pavilion.
Trailing by four points in the final 30 seconds, senior
Wade Douglas (Ontario, Ore.) connected on a lay-in with 14 seconds remaining to pull Corban within a mere two points (75-73). Following a Warrior foul, SOU's Jarrad Childs missed an important free throw that fell into the hands of Clay Martin with 12 seconds left. With a chance to win or tie the game, Martin fell victim to a costly turnover with eight seconds left that sealed the slim two-point victory for Southern Oregon.
In the opening half, Southern Oregon jumped out to a seven-point advantage (16-9) with 10:13 left in the half following a Childs' lay-in. Corban then used a 6-0 run that was highlighted by five unanswered points by Martin to pull within a mere point (16-15) following a free throw by freshman
Jake Mauermann (Clackamas, Ore.) with 9:05 remaining in the first half. Southern Oregon then used a mini 4-0 run to grab a five-point lead (20-15) before the visiting Warriors knotted the game at 20-all via their own 5-0 run that was capitalized by a Martin trifecta with 7:20 showing on the first half clock. Corban continued to add to its run via another 6-0 run that handed the Warriors' its largest lead of the half (26-20) following a lay-in by junior
Paul Martin (Beaverton, Ore.) with just under five minutes left. The host Raiders would close out the half with an 11-10 run to pull within five points (36-31) following back-to-back free throws by Childs heading into the half.
Corban would open the second half on a 4-0 run to grab its largest lead of the night (40-31) following a jumper by sophomore
Ian Logan (Aloha, Ore.) a mere one minute into the final stanza. Southern Oregon would pull within a mere point (43-42) via an 11-2 run over the span of three minutes and 35 seconds that was highlighted by a Childs' bucket with 16:35 remaining. Corban would push its lead back to seven points (49-42), as Douglas and Logan registered three points each in the midst of a 6-0 Warrior run. Corban would continue to hold its lead until SOU's Dustin Vaughn drained a jumper with 8:38 left to give the Raiders a slim two-point lead (58-56). The Warriors would re-take the lead following a traditional three-point play by Paul Martin before going on a 9-0 run that handed Corban another seven-point lead (65-58) with 6:15 remaining. Over the next three-and-a-half minutes, Southern Oregon used an 11-4 run to knot the game at 69-all before Logan handed Corban its final lead of the game (71-69) with 2:30 left. Southern Oregon used a 6-0 run over the span of two minutes to grab a 75-71 lead, as Humphrey Jackson closed out the Raiders' scoring via a free throw with 30 seconds left to set-up the game's final few possessions.
Besides Clay Martin's scoring performance, Logan, junior
Ben Potloff (Keizer, Ore.), Douglas, and Paul Martin added 15, 12, 11, and 10 points respectively to round out the Warriors' double digit scorers. The Martin brothers grabbed a game-high nine rebounds each, while Paul Martin handed out a team-best five assists.
Southern Oregon was led by Childs' game-high 23-point performance, while Scott Tiefenthaler and Eli Thornton added 14 and 12 points respectively. Jackson grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to go along with five assists, while Childs pulled down six boards and dished out five assists. Thornton turned in a game-high seven-assist performance to go along with his five rebounds and a game-high four steals.
As a team, Corban shot 29-for-60 (48.3%) from the field to go along with a 7-for-16 (43.8%) performance from behind the three-point line and an 8-for-11 (72.7%) showing from the free throw line. On the other hand, Southern Oregon was 31-for-66 (46.9%) from the field that included a 4-for-15 (26.7%) showing from beyond the arc and a 9-for-16 (56.3%) performance at the charity stripe.
With the loss, Corban falls to 4-10 overall that includes an 0-5 mark in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon pushes its winning streak to two games and moves to 5-9 overall that includes a 3-2 CCC mark. The Warriors are back in action on Tuesday, January 6th, when they conclude nearly a month-long road trip against conference rival Concordia beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. inside Cavalier Gymnasium in Portland.
