ASHLAND, Ore. – Senior
Kailey Bostwick (Medford, Ore.) made a return home for the final time during her career and came within a mere point of tying her career-high with 21 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field, but Corban's women's basketball team fell to the NAIA's No. 20-ranked Southern Oregon, 93-74, Saturday night inside McNeal Pavilion.
Corban used an opening 29-18 run to grab an 11-point lead following a jumper by senior
Ashley Connell (Spokane, Wash.) with 8:38 remaining in the first half. Unfortunately, the Warriors' lead would not last long thanks to a 13-2 run by the host Raiders that knotted the game at 31-all thanks to a lay-in by SOU's Kellyn Cooper with 4:02 showing on the clock. Over the next 90 seconds, both teams battled back and forth and had the scored tied at 37-37 before Southern Oregon used a 7-0 run to take command and secured a 44-37 lead with exactly one minute left in the half. Bostwick would cap the Warriors' first half scoring via a three-pointer before Southern Oregon would close out the opening twenty minutes of play via a Whitney Scott free throw en route to the Raiders securing a five-point lead (45-40) at intermission.
In the second half, Southern Oregon quickly pushed its lead to seven points (53-46) a mere two minutes into the final twenty minutes. Corban would pull within four points (53-49) following another Bostwick three-pointer with 16:55 left before Southern Oregon pushed its lead to double digits (65-53) via a 12-4 run that was highlighted by a Jacki Speer lay-up with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game. The Warriors would pull within seven points (72-65) following a jumper by freshman
Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) with just under eight minutes left before Southern Oregon pushed its lead to as much as the final margin of 19 points (93-74) thanks to a Lindsey Scheffler jumper with 56 seconds left. Over the final minute, neither team would register a point for the final score of 93-74.
Along with Bostwick, Steigleman and sophomore
Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) registered 10 points each to go along with Steigleman's team-best eight rebounds. Connell and freshman
Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.) added nine and eight points respectively, while Bostwick handed out a game-high nine assists.
Southern Oregon was led by Scott's game-high 22 points, while four other Raiders -- Ashley Baker, Speer, Emily Brookins, and Rhiannon Dickison -- added 16, 15, 13, and 10 points respectively. Speer pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds, while Krystal Smith handed out a team-best three assists.
As a team, Corban shot 25-for-62 (40.3%) from the field to go along with a 7-for-17 (41.2%) showing from behind the three-point line and an amazing 17-for-18 (94.4%) performance from the free throw line. On the other hand, Southern Oregon shot 31-for-70 (44.3%) from the field while turning in an 8-for-14 (57.1%) performance from beyond the arc to go along with a 23-for-37 (62.2%) showing from the charity stripe.
With the loss, Corban falls one game below .500 thanks to an overall record of 6-7 that includes a 2-3 mark in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon improves to 11-3 overall, 3-2 in CCC action. The Warriors are back in action on Tuesday, January 6th, when they conclude their month-long road trip against conference rival Concordia beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside Cavalier Gymnasium in Portland.
