Second-Year Warrior Nets 17 Points in Loss to Nationally-Ranked Cavaliers

BOX SCORE

PORTLAND, Ore.
– Sophomore Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) scored a team-high 17 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field, but Corban's women's basketball team fell to the NAIA's No. 20-ranked Cavaliers of Concordia, 73-65, Tuesday evening inside Cavalier Gymnasium.

Both teams battled back and forth over the opening six-plus minutes until Corban took a one-point lead (9-8) following a jumper in the paint by junior Monique Tribble (Coquille, Ore.) with 13:52 left in the first half.  Less than 50 seconds later, senior Kailey Bostwick (Medford, Ore.) handed the Warriors' their largest lead of the opening stanza (12-8) via a three-pointer with just over 13 minutes remaining.  Concordia would battle back and grab a one-point lead (13-12) via a 5-0 run over a span of one minute and 50 seconds before freshman Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.) knotted the game for the second time via a free throw with 9:01 showing on the clock.  Over the next eight-plus minutes, neither team would grab more than a three-point lead until Corban took a one-point advantage (26-25) via another jumper by Tribble with exactly one minute left.  Tribble would then knock down a pair of free throws to go along with a lay-up by sophomore Ashlee Jensen (Yuba City, Calif.) with 12 seconds left, as the Warriors took a five-point lead (30-25) into intermission.

In the opening two-plus minutes of the second half, Concordia would use a 7-2 run to tie the game for the fifth time at 32-32 following a lay-up by the Cavaliers' Ann Snodderly with 17:44 left in the game.  Corban would go up by three points (35-32) following an old-fashion three-point play by Miller with 16:30 showing on the game clock before the nationally-ranked Cavaliers would use a 10-0 run to secure a seven-point advantage (42-37) with 13:54 left.  Concordia would continue to extend its lead to as much as 20 points (69-49) following a Rebecca Gimeno three-pointer with 5:53 remaining before Corban would begin to cut into the Cavaliers' lead.  Over the game's final five-plus minutes, the visiting Warriors would use a 16-4 run that was highlighted by six different players scoring at least two points.  Unfortunately, the clock was Corban's enemy as the Warriors would only get as close as eight points (73-65) with 47 seconds left but could not get any closer before the game ended and Concordia extended its winning streak to 13 straight games.

Along with Miller, Steigleman and Tribble added 11 and 10 points respectively to go along with Bostwick's eight and Buhler's seven-point performances.  On the boards, Tribble pulled down a team-high five rebounds to go along with Steigleman and Buhler who registered four rebounds each.  Senior Ashley Connell (Spokane, Wash.) handed out a game-high seven assists, while Bostwick and three other Warriors registered five and one assist respectively.

Concordia was led by Gimeno's game-high 21 points, while Maryam Razavi and Snodderly added 18 and 10 points respectively.  Angela Gimeno added eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds, including seven offensive boards, and a team-high six assists.

As a team, Corban shot 22-for-57 (38.6%) from the field to go along with a 6-for-18 (33.3%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 15-for-20 (75.0%) performance from the free throw line.  On the other hand, Concordia shot 29-for-75 (38.7%) from the field that included a 7-for-22 (31.8%) showing from beyond the arc and an 8-for-16 (50.0%) showing from the charity stripe.

With the loss, Corban falls to 6-8 overall (2-4 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play) compared to Concordia's 13-1 overall mark that includes an undefeated record of 6-0 in CCC play.  The Warriors return to action on Friday, January 9th, when they host the Thunderbirds of Cascade beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
