Steigleman Nearly Nets Quadruple-Double in Come-From-Behind Win Over Cascade

BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore.
– Freshman Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) led the Warriors with a near quadruple-double, as Corban's women's basketball team wrapped up its first home game of the New Year against Cascade in come-from-behind fashion, 92-87, Friday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

"I thought that our press came alive in the second half," said tenth-year head coach Terry Williams.  "After that, we scored 61 (second half) points and that's what did it for us!  Much love to my girl, Deb."

After Cascade opened the game with a 19-6 run that was capped via a Robin Swain fast break lay-in with 12:43 left, the host Warriors used a 21-8 run over the span of eight minutes and 36 seconds to knot the game for the first time at 27-27 following a lay-up by junior Monique Tribble (Coquille, Ore.).  Using a never-say-die attitude, the visiting Thunderbirds quickly grabbed a nine-point advantage (36-27) via nine unanswered points in 94 seconds.  Corban would get as close as seven points (38-31) at intermission following another Tribble lay-up with 45 ticks showing on the clock.

In the second half, Cascade opened the final stanza with a three-pointer by Karli Thomas to grab its first double-digit lead (41-31) since the 8:58 mark of the opening half.  Corban would battle back via a 12-2 run over the span of three minutes and 54 seconds to tie the game for the third time at 43-all following a jumper by sophomore Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) with 15:26 left.  Both teams would battle over the next six-plus minutes, as neither team grabbed more than a three-point lead until the score was knotted at 59-59 thanks to a Miller jumper with 9:15 left in the contest.  Over the next two minutes and 40 seconds, the host Warriors used a 16-2 run to grab their largest lead of the game (75-61) that was highlighted by a pair of three-pointers by senior Kailey Bostwick (Medford, Ore.).  Corban would continue to apply the pressure, as the Warriors pushed their lead to as much as 16 points (90-74) following back-to-back free throws by Bostwick with 1:45 left.  On the strength of 10 points by Cascade's Amy Russell over the game's final 105 seconds, the Thunderbirds would get within five points (92-87) before the clock ran out and handed Corban a much-needed victory.

Miller led all scorer with a game-high tying 22 points on 9-for-14 shooting from the field, while Steigleman turned in the best all-around performance with 13 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, and 7 steals.  The Warriors had three other players -- Bostwick, freshman Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.), and Tribble -- score in double digits with 18, 11, and 10 points respectively.  On the boards, Steigleman's game-high tying effort was aided by seven rebounds each by Tribble and senior Ashley Connell (Spokane, Wash.).  Steigleman's game-high assist total was helped by six dimes each from Bostwick and Connell.

"(We were) not so pretty in the beginning," commented Miller.  "We pulled it out and that's what we needed.  A (win) is a (win)."

Cascade was led by the NAIA's top scorer in Division II, Kristina Schumacher, with a game-high tying 22 points despite a 4-for-23 shooting performance from the field that was aided by a 13-for-20 showing at the free throw line.  Meanwhile, Russell, Robin Swain, and Krystal Glass added 21, 13, and 10 points respectively with Swain's point total coming in 15 minutes of action before she left the game with a knee injury in the opening half.  Rebounding-wise, Cascade was led by Glass' eight-rebound effort to go along with Schumacher's team-best three assists.

As a team, Corban shot 32-for-69 (46.4%) from the field to go along with a 6-for-14 (42.9%) effort from three-point distance and a 22-for-29 (75.9%) showing from the free throw line.  Meanwhile, Cascade shot 24-for-67 (35.8%) from the field that included a 7-for-14 (50.0%) performance from long distance and a 32-for-43 (74.4%) effort from the charity stripe.

With the win, Corban improves to 7-8 overall (3-4 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play) compared to Cascade's 8-4 overall mark that includes a 1-4 mark in CCC action.  The Warriors return to the floor on Saturday, January 10th, when they host the Knights of Warner Pacific beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
