PORTLAND, Ore. – After last weekend's pair of performances against Oregon Tech and the NAIA's No. 16-ranked Southern Oregon, Corban's women's volleyball team returned after a six-day lay off and defeated Warner Pacific, 3-1 (25-17, 16-25, 25-17, 25-16), Friday night inside C.C. Perry Gymnasium.
Junior
Teri Braun (Dallas, Ore.) and freshman
Morgan Hirzel (Fullerton, Calif.) each tallied 10 kills in helping lead Corban to the four-set victory that pushed the Warriors' record to 5-11 overall and 4-4 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific falls to 6-8 overall and 2-6 in CCC action.
In the opening set, Corban jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead behind a pair of kills by Hirzel before both teams traded points until the score was 9-7 in favor of the visiting Warriors. Corban then used a 7-1 run to gain an eight-point lead (16-8) thanks to kills by Braun, freshman
Jenny Harman (Salem, Ore.), and sophomore
Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.) along with a service ace by junior
Rebecca Franke (Pendleton, Ore.). Warner Pacific would battle back to within two points (18-16) thanks to a 8-2 run that was highlighted by a service ace by North Salem graduate Leah Gradwohl. Corban would get another kill from Hirzel before a bad set and a pair of Knight attack errors coupled with a service ace by sophomore
Megan Dees (Tehachapi, Calif.) helped push the Warriors' advantage to seven points (23-17). Freshman
Chandra Baskoro (Gresham, Ore.) would close out Set #1 with a service ace for the 25-17 victory.
Set #2 would see Warner Pacific grab an early nine-point lead (11-2) before Corban used an 11-6 run to pull within four points following a service ace by Harman. The visiting Warriors would not get any closer than four points (17-13) before the host Knights used a set-closing 8-3 run that was capped by a Megan Marineau kill for the 25-16 win.
Following the 10-minute break, Corban and Warner Pacific went back-and-forth over the opening 10 combined points. With the score knotted at 5-5, Corban used a 5-1 run to earn a 10-6 advantage thanks to a kill by Braun. After a service error by Corban that made the score 10-7 in favor of the visitors, the Warriors used a 7-0 run to gain a 17-7 lead that was capped by a kill by Land. Corban would close out the set on another Braun kill for the 25-17 victory and 2-1 lead in sets.
In the fourth and final set, Corban would hold a one-point lead (10-9) following a mini 3-0 run by Warner Pacific that ended with a bad set by the Warriors. Corban would then use a 10-3 run to grab a 20-12 lead following a Warner Pacific attack error. After the host Knights used a 4-2 run to pull within six points (22-16), Corban closed out the set with a 3-0 run that included a kill by Land and a pair of Warner Pacific attack errors. The visiting Warriors would close out the match with a 25-16 victory and its fourth win in Corban's last seven matches.
Besides Braun and Hirzel's offensive performance, Harman added seven kills to go along with a Warrior duo – Baskoro and Land – that registered a pair of six-kill performances. Freshman
Karisa Calderon (Murrieta, Calif.) ran Corban's offense by handing out a match-high 26 kills, while Baskoro anchored the Warriors' defense with a match-high 23 digs. At the net, Hirzel recorded a match-high four blocks to go along with Braun and Land's pair of two-block performances.
Warner Pacific was led by Gradwohl's match-high 13 kills, while Marineau and a pair of Knights – Emily Damschen and Claire Van Meer – recorded 8, 4, and 4 kills respectively. Melita Elliot handed out a team-leading 21 assists for the Knights, while Gradwohl turned in a 19-dig performance defensively.
Corban will return to the court tomorrow evening – Saturday, October 3rd – when it takes on conference rival Concordia beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside Cavalier Gymnasium in Portland.
