BOX SCORE
PORTLAND, Ore. – For the second match in a row, senior
Teri Braun (Dallas, Ore.) led the Warriors' offense attack with seven kills but it was not enough as Corban's women's volleyball team fell to Concordia, 3-0 (21-25, 13-25, 22-25), Saturday night inside Cavalier Gymnasium.
After picking up a much-needed victory over Warner Pacific last night in four sets, Corban returned to the court looking to move up in the conference standings. Unfortunately, the visiting Warriors ran into a Cavalier squad that recorded 15-or-more kills in each set en route to securing the sweep.
In the opening set, both teams battled back and forth over the opening 16 combined points until the score was knotted at 8-8. Following a kill by freshman
Morgan Hirzel (Fullerton, Calif.) and a service ace off the arm of freshman
Karisa Calderon (Murrieta, Calif.), Concordia went on a 7-1 run to take control at 15-10 after a Warrior ball handling error. Corban would battle back to tie the set at 21-21 following a Cavalier ball handling miscue, but Concordia closed out Set #1 with four unanswered points that was capped by a Warrior attack error for the final score of 25-21.
Set #2 saw Corban take an early two-point lead (7-5) after a Concordia attack error. The host Cavaliers would then use an 8-0 run to take a commanding 13-7 lead after an attack error by the Warriors. Concordia would close out the middle set on a 12-5 run that concluded with a combo block by the Cavaliers' McKenzie Rath and Mariana Toscano for the 25-13 victory.
The third and final set was a battle in the beginning with Corban securing an early two-point advantage (8-6) following a combo block by Calderon and sophomore
Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.). The visiting Warriors would continue to hold the lead until the score was 14-12 after an attack error by the host Cavaliers. Concordia's Clair Thiel would then take control scoring three straight points that spearheaded a match-closing 13-8 run that ended with a Warrior attack error for the final score of 25-21 in favor of Concordia.
Besides Braun's team-leading performance, Land and Hirzel chipped in with six kills each. Calderon and sophomore
Megan Dees (Tehachapi, Calif.) combined to hand out 24 assists, as Calderon led the way with 15. Defensively, Corban was anchored in the back row by junior
Rebecca Franke's
(Pendleton, Ore.) team-best 18 digs. At the net, Corban registered 16 blocks with Land recording a team-leading five assist blocks.
Concordia was led offensively by Toscano's match-high 16 kills, while Raluca Dinca and Thiel added 12 and 11 respectively. Skyler Kamaka handed out a match-high 42 assists for the Cavaliers, while Kim Lindow registered a match-high 22 digs from her back row position.
Following tonight's result, Corban is now 5-12 overall and 4-5 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Meanwhile, Concordia improves to 10-6 overall and 7-2 in CCC play. The Warriors will return to the court on Tuesday, October 6th, when they take a break from conference play traveling north to Portland to face NCAA Division III member Lewis & Clark beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Rose City.
