Warriors Haunted By Owls of Oregon Tech

BOX SCORE

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore.
– In its final road match of the season, Corban's women's volleyball team felt the effects of Halloween night as it was haunted by the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech in a 3-1 (22-25, 22-25, 25-20, 21-25) loss Saturday evening on Danny Miles Court.

With tonight's result, Corban falls to 9-17 overall and 7-10 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Oregon Tech improves to 6-18 overall and 5-11 in conference action.

Despite a combined 31 kills by the freshmen duo of Chandra Baskoro (Gresham, Ore.) and Jenny Harman (Salem, Ore.), the visiting Warriors could not overcome the two-headed attack of OIT's Megan Christensen and Joey Larsen. The Oregon Tech duo combined for 32 kills, as Christensen registered a match-high 19 to go along with Larsen's 13.

In the opening set, both teams battled back and forth through the first 30 combined points until a combo block by sophomore Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.) and freshman Morgan Hirzel (Fullerton, Calif.) made the score 15-15. Over the next seven points, Oregon Tech used a 6-1 run that was capped via a service ace by Paige Wallachy that made the score 21-16 in favor of the host Owls. Corban would battle back to within one point (22-21) thanks to a 5-1 run that ended with a service ace of the hand of junior Rebecca Franke (Pendleton, Ore.). Oregon Tech would close out Set #1 with a 3-1 run, as the visiting Warriors registered their eighth and final hitting error of the opening frame for the final score of 25-22.

Set #2 saw Corban build a quick three-point lead (7-4) after a Hirzel kill, but Oregon Tech would back to tie the frame at 7-7 before the two teams went into a dog fight. With the score knotted at 18-18, the host Owls used a mini 3-0 run that made the score 21-18 following a combo block by Christensen and Porsha Ellison. OIT's run would be the difference, as Corban could not get any closer than two points (24-22) after an Owl attack error. Oregon Tech would close out the second set with a Miranda Weitz kill for the final tally of 25-22.

The third set looked like the beginning of the end for Corban, as Oregon Tech built an early six-point lead (13-7) after an Ellison kill. Not wanting to have their night ended in straight sets, the visiting Warriors mounted a comeback that began with an 8-2 run that knotted things at 15-15 following a kill by junior Teri Braun (Dallas, Ore.). Corban then used a set-closing 10-5 run that ended with a kill by Baskoro for the final score of 25-20.

Set #4 began with the Warriors building an early four-point lead (11-7) after a Hirzel kill. Unfortunately, Oregon Tech was not in the mood to go to a fifth and deciding set thanks to an 8-4 run that tied things at 15-all after a Larsen kill. The host Owls then used an 8-3 run to grab their largest lead of the fourth set (23-18) thanks to a combo block by Weitz and Sarah Svedin. A pair of Christensen kills would end the four-set affair, as Oregon Tech closed out the match with a 25-21 victory.

Besides Baskoro's team-leading 16 and Harman's 15 kills, a trio of Warriors – Braun (7), Hirzel (4), and Land (4) – accounted for Corban's only other point-scoring attacks. Freshman Karisa Calderon (Murrieta, Calif.) ran the Warriors' offense with a match-high 23 assists, while Franke anchored Corban's defense with a match-high 14 digs. At the net, Land accounted for six (1 solo, 5 assist) of the Warriors' 12 blocks on the night.

Oregon Tech was led by Christensen's match-high performance in kills, while Larsen added her point-scoring total and Mikayla Morgan chipped in with six of her own. Svedin handed out a team-leading 22 assists, while Wallachy recorded a team-high 12 digs defensively.

Corban will wrap up the 2009 season on Friday, November 6th, against conference rival Northwest Christian beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

NOTE: During the 10-minute break between Set #2 and #3, the Warriors will be honoring lone senior Andrea Potloff (Aumsville, Ore.) for her four years of service to the program.
