BOX SCORE
NEWBERG, Ore. – After winning the opening four games of the 2009-10 season, Corban's men's basketball team has dropped each of its last two games that included a loss Tuesday night to NCAA Division III member George Fox, 99-91, inside the Wheeler Sports Center.
Nearing the end of the opening month of competition, Corban finds itself at 4-2 overall. Meanwhile, George Fox improves to 1-1after just two games this season.
Sophomore
Erik Cronrath (Battle Ground, Wash.) led the Warriors with a team-high 21 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the field to go along with a 7-for-9 performance at the free throw line. The second-year Warrior led a quintet of players in double figures, as Corban shot a season-best 59.4% (38-for-64) from the field.
Senior
Ben Potloff (Keizer, Ore.) added 20 points on 9-for-15 shooting from the field, while juniors
Ian Logan (Aloha, Ore.) and
Bryan Martin (Salem, Ore.) chipped in with 19 and 13 points respectively. Meanwhile, junior
Deonte Johnson (Modesto, Calif.) rounded out the Warriors' double-digit scorers with 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds.
In the opening half, Corban jumped out to a quick 13-point lead (20-7) after the first five-plus minutes following a Martin lay-in with 14:59 showing on the clock. George Fox would battle back to within four points (33-29) after an Alex Stockner lay-in with 4:25 remaining. The visiting Warriors would extend their lead back to double digits (44-34) after a Logan jumper with just over one minute remaining before the host Bruins pulled within six points (47-41) at the half after Evan Atwater hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer.
Corban would push its lead back to double digits (55-43) following a Potloff lay-up with 17:57 left in the game. Unfortunately, the Warriors' lead would not hold as George Fox used a 43-31 run over a span of 14 minutes and 10 seconds to knot the score at 86-all with 3:47 remaining after a Stockner lay-in. The host Bruins would grab the lead at 89-86 after a three-pointer by Stephen Wisely and never relinquished it, as George Fox used a perfect 8-for-8 performance at the free throw line over the game's final three-plus minutes en route to grabbing its first win of the season.
George Fox was led scoring-wise by Stockner's game-high 25 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field and a 7-for-10 performance at the free throw line. Three Bruins – Atwater, Wisely, and Rich Smith – tallied double-digit scoring totals with 19, 16, and 14 points respectively, while Travis Toedtemeier added nine points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Despite Corban's season-high shooting performance, the visiting Warriors converted on only 2-out-of-11 three-point shots and turned in a 13-for-16 showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, George Fox was 33-for-60 (55.0%) from the field that included a 10-for-17 (58.8%) performance from long distance and a 23-for-29 showing at the charity stripe.
The Warriors will return to the hardwood on Saturday, November 28th, against NCAA Division III member Pacific University of Oregon with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
