BOX SCORE
MORROW COVE, Calif. – Senior
Ben Potloff (Keizer, Ore.) shot 13-for-16 from the field en route to a game and career-high 33 points, as Corban's men's basketball team opened the 2009-10 season with a wire-to-wire 92-88 victory over California State University-Maritime Thursday night inside Mayo Hall.
"The win felt good, as this is a good start to our season," said eighth-year head coach
Justin Sherwood. "We played well in spurts even though we did not shoot real well from the free throw line. I am proud of how our guys played and they should enjoy this victory tonight."
With tonight's season-opening victory, Corban opens with a win for the sixth time in Sherwood's eight seasons at the helm of the Warriors. Meanwhile, California State-Maritime falls to 0-3 this season.
Thanks to a 57.6% shooting performance on the night, Corban grabbed the lead early and never trailed. Even though the Warriors held a 20-point lead with ten minutes to play, Corban needed to hold on for the slim four-point victory as the host Keelhaulers made a last-minute run in an attempt to grab their first win of the season.
Along with Potloff's game-high point total, junior
Ian Logan (Aloha, Ore.) and sophomore
Erik Cronrath (Battle Ground, Wash.) added 21 and 11 points respectively as the duo combined to shoot 13-for-23 from the field. Sophomore
Jake Mauermann (Clackamas, Ore.) came off the bench to provide six points, while a pair of freshmen –
Jordan Graneto (Keizer, Ore.) and
Jacob Kopra (Gresham, Ore.) – added five points each in their collegiate debuts.
As a team, Corban shot 34-for-59 (57.6%) from the field that included a 66.7% (16-for-24) performance over the game's final twenty minutes. The Warriors also went 5-for-14 (35.7%) from behind the three-point line and 19-for-30 (63.3%) at the free throw line in the victory.
California State-Maritime was led by Andrew Medeiros, who tallied 20 points on 8-for-22 shooting from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 showing at the free throw line. Medeiros was aided by Josh Greenwell and Eddie Williams, who tallied 17 and 16 points respectively, while Michael Weimer provided 12 points off the Keehaulers' bench.
CSU-Maritime shot 33-for-73 (45.2%) from the field, as the host team went 6-for-17 (35.3%) from beyond the arc and 16-for-26 (61.5%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will return to the hardwood tomorrow afternoon – Friday, November 6th – against the Hawks of Holy Names in a 4:00 p.m. contest in Oakland, California that is scheduled to tip-off inside Tobin Gym.
