ASHLAND, Ore. – Junior
Nash Keene (Aumsville, Ore.) scored a team-leading 20 points on 8-for-11 shooting from the field that included a 4-for-6 performance from beyond the three-point arc, but it was not enough as Corban's men's basketball team fell to the Raiders of Southern Oregon, 87-76, Thursday night inside McNeal Pavilion.
With tonight's result, Corban falls to 5-10 overall and 0-5 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon improves to 9-7 overall and picks up its first win in conference play this season to sit at 1-5 heading into the New Year.
Along with Keene, sophomores
Erik Cronrath (Battle Ground, Wash.) and
Jake Mauermann (Clackamas, Ore.) added 15 and 11 points respectively. On the boards, Cronrath and junior
Deonte Johnson (Modesto, Calif.) pulled down a team-leading seven rebounds each to go along with junior
Bryan Martin's nine points and a game-high seven assists.
Southern Oregon would score the game's opening five points before extending its lead to as much as 21 points (41-20) following a fast break lay-in by Jarrad Childs with just over four minutes remaining. Corban would cut the Raiders' lead to 15 points (44-29) thanks to a Martin lay-in with six seconds left before SOU's Austin Wolfer connected on a buzzer-beating lay-up for the halftime margin of 17 points (46-29).
In the second half, Corban would slowly cut into Southern Oregon's lead as the visiting Warriors would get within two points (65-63) following a Cronrath jumper with 7:50 left in the game. That would be as close as Corban would get, as the host Raiders used a game-closing 22-13 run en route to securing an 11-point win (87-76).
Southern Oregon was led in scoring by Childs' game-high 23 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field and an 11-for-15 showing at the free throw line. Childs was aided scoring-wise by David Grant and Wolfer, who tallied 11 points each to go along with Grant's game-high 10 rebounds that included five offensive and five defensive boards.
As a team, Corban shot 26-for-61 (42.6%) from the field to go along with a 7-for-18 (38.9%) showing from three-point range and a 17-for-23 (73.9%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Southern Oregon was 30-for-68 (44.1%) from the field, 3-for-10 (30.0%) from long distance, and 24-for-34 (70.6%) from the charity stripe.
Corban will return to the hardwood on Saturday, January 2nd, when the Warriors conclude their three-game road trip against California Pacific Conference member Simpson beginning at approximately 3:00 p.m. in Redding, California.
