Warriors' Favorite Martin Helps in Win over Fox

SALEM, Ore.
– Junior Bryan Martin (Salem, Ore.) scored a team and career-high 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting from the field to go along with a game-high tying five assists, as Corban's men's basketball team defeated the Bruins of George Fox, 82-72, Tuesday night inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

With tonight's win, Corban evens its record at 5-5 and in the process snaps a five-game losing streak. Meanwhile, George Fox drops its record to 3-3 that includes two straight losses over the past five days.

Martin looked like a different player on the floor tonight, as the third-year Warrior played 28 minutes and registered three rebounds and three steals to go along with his point and rebound totals.

Aiding Martin in the scoring category was senior Ben Potloff (Keizer, Ore.) and junior Ian Logan (Aloha, Ore.), who tallied 11 points each. Logan, who came off the bench for the first time this season, also added a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with junior Deonte Johnson (Modesto, Calif.) and sophomore Jake Mauermann's (Clackamas, Ore.) nine points each.

The two teams would battle back and forth over the opening five-plus minutes, as Corban grabbed a slim one-point lead (8-7) following a Mauermann lay-in with 14:53 remaining. Over the next 63 seconds, the host Warriors would use a 5-0 run en route to grabbing a 13-7 lead thanks to a three-pointer by Mauermann with 13:50 left in the half. After George Fox grabbed a one-point lead (14-13) after a Dan Lingenfelder three-pointer with 11:39 remaining, Corban pushed its lead to eight points (22-14) following a tip-in by junior Nash Keene (Aumsville, Ore.) with 8:17 left on the clock. Over the next seven-plus minutes, George Fox used a 21-13 run that knotted the game for only the second time at 35-all after a three-pointer by Evan Atwater with 60 seconds left. After a defensive stand that handed Corban the ball with just over three seconds left, freshman Jordan Graneto (Keizer, Ore.) played beat the clock when he hoisted a three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer sounded that hit nothing but net and handed the host Warriors a three-point advantage (38-35) at intermission.

In the second half, George Fox would battle back to grab a one-point lead (45-44) following a jumper by Cole Whitehurst with 16:16 left in the game. After falling behind for the final time all night, Corban used a 28-12 run over the span of 11:15 en route to grabbing game-high 15-point lead (72-57) thanks to a three-pointer by Logan with just over five minutes remaining. George Fox would only get as close as 10 points over the final five-plus minutes, as Corban went a combined 6-for-10 at the free throw line en route to securing the 10-point, come-from-behind victory (82-72).

Alex Stockner led George Fox with a game-high 21 points on 8-for-15 shooting from the field, while three other Bruins – Atwater, Whitehurst, and Lingenfelder – added 19, 13, and 10 points respectively. Whitehurst grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and handed out a game-high tying five assists, while Travis Toedtemeier turned in a seven-point, eight-rebound, four-assist performance in 35 minutes of action.

As a team, Corban shot 32-for-65 (49.2%) from the field to go along with a 3-for-15 (20.0%) showing from three-point distance and a 15-for-24 (62.5%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, George Fox was 25-for-56 (44.6%) from the field, 10-for-22 (45.5%) from long distance, and 12-for-21 (57.1%) at the charity stripe.

The Warriors will return to the court on Friday, December 11th, when they host cross town rival and NCAA Division III member Willamette beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
