Ian Logan (Aloha, Ore.) scored 22 and 21 points respectively on a combined 13-for-24 shooting from the field, as Corban's men's basketball team picked a much-needed victory over Southern Oregon, 74-65, Friday night inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
“Tonight's win was key as we look to remain in the playoff hunt,” commented seventh-year head coach
Justin Sherwood. “(I feel that) we finished great down the stretch, as we made our free throws and sealed the game late.”
After tying the game at 2-2 thanks to a Logan bucket, the Warriors went ice cold as Southern Oregon used a 7-0 run to take a 9-2 advantage with 15:56 remaining in the first half. Using a never-say-die attitude, Corban battled back with a 10-3 run over a span of four minutes and 50 seconds to knot the game at 12-all with just over 11 minutes left. After trading buckets back and forth over the next six-plus minutes, Corban began to pull away from its counterpart with the score reading 22-22 via an 11-6 run that was capped with a Logan three-pointer as the clock showed 2:44 and the score was 33-26 in favor of the home team. Over the final two-plus minutes, Southern Oregon used a closing 4-0 run to creep within three points (33-30) at halftime.
In the second half, the Warriors increased their lead to as much as nine points (45-36) following a jumper by sophomore
Clay Martin (Beaverton, Ore.) with 15:07 remaining in the contest. Over the next seven-plus minutes, Southern Oregon used a 22-5 run to take a six-point lead (56-50) following a jumper by Humphrey Jackson with 7:28 on the clock. Corban would spark a comeback via an 11-4 run that handed the host Warriors a slim one-point lead (61-60) thanks to a Logan jumper with 3:30 remaining. Southern Oregon would grab its final lead of the game (62-61) following back-to-back free throws by Austin Wolfer with just over three minutes left. The host Warriors would regain the lead for good (63-62) thanks to another Logan jumper before Corban used a game-ending 11-3 run that resulted in the final margin of nine points (74-65).
Paul Martin and Logan were aided scoring-wise by Clay Martin's 15-point, seven-rebound performance. Meanwhile, junior
Ben Potloff (Keizer, Ore.) added nine points to go along with freshman
Erik Cronrath's three points and five rebounds. On the boards, Clay Martin pulled down a team-best seven rebounds to go along with Paul Martin's game-high seven assists.
Southern Oregon was led by Wolfer's 18 points, while Eli Thornton and Jarred Childs added 14 and 13 points respectively. Josh McDermott pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, while four Raiders handed out three assists each.
As a team, Corban shot 26-for-56 (46.4%) from the field that included a 6-for-22 (27.3%) showing from three-point range and a 16-for-20 (80.0%) performance from the free throw line. On the other hand, Southern Oregon was 24-for-51 (47.1%) from the field, 5-for-12 (41.7%) from long distance, and 12-for-20 (60.0%) at the charity stripe.
With the win, Corban improves to 11-17 overall and 7-12 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon falls to 9-19 overall and 7-12 in CCC action. The Warriors return to action on Saturday, February 21st, when they host the NAIA's No. 10-ranked Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
