AZUSA, Calif. – Despite a team-high 11 kills from freshman
Morgan Hirzel (Fullerton, Calif.), Corban's women's volleyball team opened the second day of the Cougar Classic with a loss to the NAIA's No. 20-ranked Eagles of Biola, 3-0 (15-25, 14-25, 21-25), inside the Felix Event Center on the campus of Azusa Pacific University.
For the third straight match, Hirzel led the Warriors in kills with her third consecutive double-digit total. The 6-foot-2 first-year Warrior from Southern California tallied 11 kills, while registering a season-high three blocks (all assist) against the nationally-ranked Eagle squad.
Along with Hirzel's team-high total in kills, sophomore
Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.) returned to the form that she showed last season as a freshman thanks to a season-high eight kills during the three-set affair. Hirzel and Land were aided by freshman
Chandra Baskoro (Gresham, Ore.), who tallied four kills to go along with nine digs.
Running the Warriors' offense was freshman
Karisa Calderon (Murrieta, Calif.), who handed out a team-high 16 assists. Sophomore
Megan Dees (Tehachapi, Calif.) aided Calderon's efforts with eight assists, while junior
Heather Anderson (Corbett, Ore.) tallied a season-high 10 digs from her back row position.
Biola was led by Kelsey Christoferson's match-high 14 kills, while Tavea Hampton and Amy Mosebar added seven kills each. Justine Schoneveld handed out a match-high 33 assists for the Eagles, while Katie Stevens anchored Biola's back row with a match-high 13 digs.
With this morning's result, Corban finds itself at 0-3 on the young season compared to Biola's early 2-1 record. The Warriors will return to the court this afternoon for their final match at the Cougar Classic against The Master's College beginning at 1:30 p.m. inside the Felix Event Center on the campus of Azusa Pacific University.
