Conference Season Opens With Loss to Cavs

BOX SCORE

PORTLAND, Ore.
– After playing three non-conference games to open the season, Corban's men's soccer team began its conference schedule with a 3-0 loss to nationally-ranked Concordia Saturday night at Delta Park.

After picking up a season-opening victory over cross-town rival Willamette and earning a hard-fought tie with nationally-ranked Holy Names, Corban concluded its non-conference schedule with a heart-breaking one-goal loss to William Jessup on Monday. Tonight's conference-opener was played under the lights in Portland and was not in the Warriors' favor from the beginning.

Concordia got on the score board in the eighth minute when Tyler Camp took a combo pass from Turner Bloom and James Gaynor. The scoring play began with a tap pass from Gaynor to Bloom, who sent a cross from the right side onto the awaiting foot of Camp. Without any hesitation, Camp blasted a shot from eight yards out into the upper right corner for the eventual game-winning goal.

Corban would trail by a mere goal at halftime, but Concordia extended its lead in the 56th minute when Facundo Dipascuale cracked an eight-yard shot into the back of the net off a combo assist by Camp and Stephen Pies for the two-goal Cavalier advantage.

Less than 10 minutes later, Camp teamed with Mirza Ramic for the final goal of the night via a corner kick. Camp would send a bending ball towards the goal, as Ramic headed home the Cavaliers' third goal of the evening against the visiting Warriors.

Senior goalkeeper Aaron Franklin (Red Bluff, Calif.) played the entire 90 minutes for the Warriors and registered a game-high five saves. Meanwhile, Concordia's Claudio Lazar needed to make only one save en route to recording the shutout.

Freshman Bruno Batista (Sao Paulo, Brazil) led the Warriors' offense with two shots, while four other Corban players – senior Chris Smerke (Las Vegas, Nev.), senior Mark Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.), sophomore Devin Chaney (Helena, Mont.), and freshman Peter Martin (Salem, Ore.) – registered one shot each on the night.

With tonight's result, Corban falls to 1-2-1 overall and 0-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Concordia improves to 2-1-1 overall and 1-0 in CCC action. The Warriors will return to the field on Wednesday, September 16th, when they take on the Knights of Warner Pacific beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Warrior Field.
