BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore.
– Freshmen Chandra Baskoro (Gresham, Ore.) and Morgan Hirzel (Fullerton, Calif.) combined to register 19 kills, as Corban's women's volleyball team swept the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech, 3-0 (26-24, 28-26, 25-22), Friday night inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

In a match that saw 25 ties and 10 lead changes, Corban picked up its first victory over Oregon Tech since the 2004 season when then-Western Baptist defeated the Hustlin' Owls, 3-1 (30-9, 28-30, 30-22, 30-22), in Salem. Since that win, the Warriors had been swept by OIT eight straight times that included a three-set victory in the quarterfinals of last season's conference post season tournament.

"It feels so good to come together," said senior co-captain Andrea Potloff (Aumsville, Ore.), who chipped in with five digs and one assist. "We defended our home court and beat a tough team in OIT tonight. We haven't taken a match from them since I've played for the Warriors."

In the opening set, Corban fell behind by five points (15-10) following a kill by OIT's Megan Christensen. Using a never-say-die attitude, the Warrior battled back and tied the set at 19-19 via a 9-4 run that was highlighted by kill from junior Teri Braun (Dallas, Ore.). Both teams traded points back and forth until Corban secured a one-point lead (25-24) after a service ace by freshman Karisa Calderon (Murrieta, Calif.). The Warriors won Set #1 thanks to a set-closing attack error by the visiting Hustlin' Owls, as Corban secured the opening set by two points (26-24) in extra play.

Set #2 was a repeat of the opening set, as Oregon Tech grabbed an early four-point lead (10-6) after a Joey Larsen kill. Corban battled back to tie the middle set at 11-11 via a 5-1 run that was capitalized by a Hirzel kill. Trading points back and forth was the theme over the next 22 combined points until the set was knotted at 22-all following a Warrior attack error. OIT grabbed its first set point at 24-23 after another Christensen kill, but Corban fought off two set points thanks to a kill by Baskoro and a Owl service error. A combo block by Calderon and fellow freshman Jenny Harman (Salem, Ore.) handed Corban its first set point, as the Warriors got a set-closing attack error from OIT for the two-point win (28-26).

The third and final set began differently for Corban, as the Warriors jumped out to a quick four-point lead (7-3) thanks to another Baskoro kill. Oregon Tech battled back and knotted the final frame at 10-10, but Corban kept the momentum and continued to hold the lead by as much as three points (18-15) behind another OIT attack error. The set was tied for the fourth and final time at 22-22 after a Baskoro kill before Corban used another kill from Braun to go along with a match-ending combo block by Baskoro and Braun for the three-point win (25-22) and clean sweep.

Along with Baskoro's team-best 10 and Hirzel's nine kills, Land and Braun added eight kills coupled with Harman's three. Calderon and sophomore Megan Dees (Tehachapi, Calif.) combined to hand out 31 assists, as Calderon registered a match-high 21. Defensively, junior Rebecca Franke (Pendleton, Ore.) recorded a match-high 18 digs to go along with Baskoro's double-double of 10 kills and 12 digs. At the net, Braun and Calderon registered a match-high five blocks each as Corban combined for 11 team blocks.

Oregon Tech was led by Christensen's match-high 15 kills, while Mikalya Morgan and Christine Bansen added 8 and 7 kills respectively. Sarah Svedin and Jackie Polette handed out a team-best 13 assists each, while Svedin anchored the Owls' back line with a team-leading 12 digs.

With the victory, Corban improves to 4-10 overall and 3-3 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Oregon Tech has its two-match winning streak snapped and falls to 3-12 overall that included a 2-5 mark in CCC action. The Warriors will return to the court tomorrow night – Saturday, September 26th – against the NAIA's No. 16-ranked Raiders of Southern Oregon beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
