SALEM, Ore. – A trio of Warriors that included senior
Ben Potloff (Keizer, Ore.), sophomore
Erik Cronrath (Battle Ground, Wash.), and junior
Nash Keene (Aumsville, Ore.) combined for 68 points, but it was not enough as Corban's men's basketball team fell to the Cavaliers of Concordia, 87-80, Saturday night inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
With tonight's result, Corban falls to 6-12 overall and 1-6 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Meanwhile, Concordia improves to 12-5 overall and 3-4 in league play.
The aforementioned trio combined to score 85% of Corban's total points, as Potloff turned in a game-high 24 points on 9-for-19 shooting from the field. Meanwhile, Cronrath tallied a career-high 23 points on a perfect 9-for-9 shooting from the field to go along with Keene's 21-point performance on 7-for-17 shooting from the field. Potloff, Cronrath, and Keene combined to shoot 25-for-45 from the field that included eight three-pointers, while the rest of the team was 3-for-19 from the field against the visiting Cavaliers.
Junior
Ian Logan (Aloha, Ore.) chipped in with four points and a team-high eight rebounds off the bench, while fellow junior
Deonte Johnson (Modesto, Calif.) tallied four points, three rebounds, and a team-leading two blocked shots.
After the opening eight minutes, Corban clung to a slim one-point lead (21-20) following a Potloff lay-in before the Warriors used an 8-2 run over a span of 5:27 en route to securing a seven-point lead (29-22). Following Logan's fast break lay-in that handed Corban its largest lead of the opening half, Concordia used an 18-0 run that was capped with a Sergio Rosario three-pointer en route to grabbing an 11-point lead (40-29) with 2:26 left in the opening half. Corban would score 10 of the final 12 points in the first half, as the Warriors pulled to within three points (42-39) at halftime thanks to a Keene three-pointer for the final points of the first twenty minutes.
The second half would open with Corban fighting its way back and grabbed a two-point lead (59-57) after a pair of Potloff free throws with 10:43 left in the game. Over the next four-plus minutes, Corban would use an 11-6 run en route to grabbing a seven-point lead (70-63) following a Potloff lay-in with 6:22 on the clock. The host Warriors would hold a late five-point advantage (80-75) with 2:19 remaining after a pair of Johnson free throws before Concordia used a game-closing 12-0 run that included six points from preseason all-conference pick Alex Tiefenthaler en route to securing the 87-80 come-from-behind victory.
Concordia had five players in double figures led by Jourdan Sweeney's 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field to go along with a game-high 10 rebounds. Tiefenthaler and Drew Preuninger added 12 points each, while Gage Aker and Rosario chipped in with 11 points apiece for the victorious Cavaliers.
As a team, Corban shot 28-for-64 (43.8%) from the field to go along with an 8-for-20 (40.0%) performance from beyond the three-point line and a 16-for-18 (88.9%) showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, Concordia was 30-for-63 (47.6%) from the field, 7-for-21 (33.3%) from long distance, and 20-for-23 (87.0%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will return to the hardwood on Friday, January 15th, against the Coyotes of The College of Idaho beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. (Mountain Standard Time) inside the J.A. Albertson Activities Center in Caldwell, Idaho.
