Warriors Remain Unbeaten with Win Over Bruins

BOX SCORE

NEWBERG, Ore. – For the first time since 2002, Corban's men's basketball team defeated NCAA Division III member George Fox on the Bruins' home floor, 95-90, Friday inside the Wheeler Sports Center as four starters scored in double figures led by junior Erik Cronrath's (Battle Ground, Wash.) team-high 25 points.

Corban had not defeated George Fox on its home court in almost ten years, as ninth-year head coach Justin Sherwood's former employer was riding a six-game home winning streak against the Warriors.

Cronrath would tally his team-best point total on 7-for-14 shooting from the field to go along with an 11-for-12 performance at the free throw line, while freshman Jordan Carter (Salem, Ore.) scored a career-high 19 points. Juniors Ian Logan (Aloha, Ore.) and Jonathan Ramirez (New Britain, Ct.) added 17 and 10 points respectively, while senior Nash Keene (Aumsville, Ore.) and junior Jake Mauermann (Clackamas, Ore.) chipped in with 9 and 8 points respectively. On the boards, Logan pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to go along with eight by Carter and five from freshman Josiah Sebens (Bellingham, Wash.) off the bench.

The opening 15-plus minutes would be a see-saw battle between the Warriors and Bruins with neither team secruing more than a five-point lead. With the score knotted at 40-40 following a pair of Cronrath free throws with 3:49 remaining, George Fox used a quick 10-0 run over a span of two-plus minutes to grab a 50-40 lead thanks to a Mike Taylor three-pointer with 1:43 on the clock. Three straight Taylor shots from long distance would increase the Bruins' lead to 12 points (56-44) before Carter hit a free throw, as Corban settled for an 11-point deficit (56-45) at halftime.

Corban would open the second half on a 9-0 run to pull within two points (56-54), as Cronrath scored four points, Carter added three, and Ramirez chipped in with two in the opening spurt. George Fox would push its lead to eight points (62-54) with a quick 6-0 run before the visiting Warriors used a 9-1 run to knot the game at 63-all after a Cronrath lay-in with 13:32 left in the game. The two teams would trade leads back and forth over the next nine-plus minutes until Corban took the lead for good securing a one-point lead (79-78) after a Mauermann jumper with just over six minutes left. The visiting Warriors would push their lead to as much as six points (90-84) after two Cronrath free throws with 2:22 on the clock. Corban would use timely scoring and good defense over the final two-plus minutes, as the Warriors secured the win (95-90) and opened their second straight season unbeaten after four games.

Taylor led George Fox with a game-high 30 points on 11-for-23 shooting from the field that included 22 first half points, while Cole Whitehurst added 25 points and a pair of Bruins – Stephen Wiseley and Rich Smith – netted double figure point totals with 18 and 14 respectively. Taylor would pull down a team-high seven rebounds to go along with Wiseley's game-high eight assists.

In the game, Corban shot a season-high 32-for-58 (55.2%) from the field that included an 8-for-19 (42.1%) clip from behind the three-point line and a 23-for-30 (76.7%) showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, George Fox was 34-for-66 (51.5%) from the field, 8-for-23 (34.8%) from long distance, and 14-for-22 (63.6%) at the charity stripe.

With tonight's outcome, Corban improves to 4-0 on the season and George Fox opens its 2010-11 campaign at 0-1. The Warriors will be back in action tomorrow night – Saturday, November 20th – against NCAA Division III member Pacific University of Oregon beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Forest Grove.
