BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Renowned ESPN college basketball color analyst Dick Vitale coined the phrase "Diaper Dandy" when referring to a sensational freshman.
That is exactly what Corban's men's basketball first-year phenom
Jordan Carter (Salem, Ore.) was Friday against NCAA Division III member Pacific, as he scored a career-high 28 points on 10-for-18 shooting from the field that included the game-tying three-pointer with less than three seconds left in regulation that forced five minutes of extra play.
In overtime, Carter would go 4-for-6 from the line and tallied six of the Warriors' nine points in the extra period en route to helping Corban pick up a hard-fought 80-77 win over the visiting Boxers inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
"Scoring a career-high feels really good because we won," said Carter. "We ran the offense throughout the game and I tried to take the shots when I had them."
The first-year Warrior was aided offensively by three other fellow starters – senior
Ian Logan (Aloha, Ore.), junior
Erik Cronrath (Battle Ground, Wash.), and junior
Jonathan Ramirez (New Britain, Conn.) – with 15, 13, and 11 points respectively. Carter also posted his third double-double of the season with a team-high 10 rebounds, while Cronrath and Logan pulled down eight and six boards respectively. Ramirez ran Corban's offense with a game-high five assists, while Cronrath tallied a game-high five blocks on the night.
Pacific came out and scored the opening seven points on a perfect 3-for-3 in the first 60 seconds before Corban got on the board at the 18:48 mark via a three-pointer by Ramirez. The Warriors would battle back to take a slim one-point lead (8-7) following another trey by Ramirez and a lay-in by senior
Nash Keene with 17:05 on the clock. Neither team would hold more than four point lead over the final 17-plus minutes, as the game was tied 10 times and Pacific took a two-point advantage (38-36) into halftime after LeMar Anglin hit a pair of free throws following a Corban foul simultaneously as the final buzzer sounded.
The second half would open similar to the first, as Pacific increased its slim lead to four points (42-38) after a Colin Wester lay-in with 19:21 left. Corban then used a 17-2 run over a span of seven-plus minutes that handed the host Warriors an 11-point lead (55-44) thanks to a Cronrath lay-in with 11:56 on the clock. Pacific would then step up defensively, as Corban did not score again until the 6:39 mark and the visiting Boxers used an 11-0 run that tied the game for the 11th time at 55-all. Cronrath would break the Warriors' scoring drought with another lay-in before Corban increased its lead to three points (62-59) following a Carter lay-up with 4:49 remaining. Pacific would go on a 9-2 run over the next three minutes en route to grabbing a four-point lead (68-64) thanks to a Carson Bartlett lay-in with 1:15 left. Over the next minute, Bartlett would hit a free throw that resulted in Corban trailing by three points (69-66) with 28 seconds on the clock. Timely inside play pulled the host Warriors within a mere point (69-68) thanks to a Logan lay-in before Anglin hit back-to-back free throws to set Carter's last-second heroics.
"We had never run that play before, but Coach (Sherwood) drew up the play for Ian to screen for me," said Carter. "Luckily the guy was real short and I was just able to jump over him and knock down the shot."
In the extra period, Corban took the lead on a Carter free throw twenty seconds in and never looked back. The host Warriors would go 2-for-3 from the field and 5-for-8 at the free throw line, as Corban picked up its second straight win via the three-point victory (80-77).
Pacific was led in scoring by Anglin, who tallied 26 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Meanwhile, Bartlett, Adam McElwee, and Andrew Beatty chipped in with 16, 13, and 10 points respectively. Anglin was aided on the boards by Bartlett, who pulled down seven rebounds that included four offensive boards.
As a team, Corban shot 27-for-59 (45.8%) from the field to go along with a 7-for-20 (35.0%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a combined 19-for-27 (70.4%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Pacific was a combined 28-for-72 (38.9%) from the field, 3-for-24 (12.5%) from long distance, and 18-for-24 (75.0%) at the charity stripe.
With the win, Corban improves to 9-4 and remains unbeaten at home in four games. Meanwhile, Pacific drops its second straight game and falls to 2-5 on the season. The Warriors will return to the hardwood tomorrow night – Saturday, December 18th – against New Hope Christian College beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Eugene.
