Carter Shows Brilliance Against Bruins of GFU

BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore.
 – Freshman Jordan Carter (Salem, Ore.) continues to show signs of brilliance this season registering team-highs of 21 points and nine rebounds Monday against NCAA Division III member George Fox, but it was not enough as Corban's men's basketball team dropped a heart-breaker, 83-75, inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

For the third straight game, Carter led the Warriors in scoring followed by junior Erik Cronrath (Battle Ground, Wash.) with 13 points, junior Jake Mauermann (Clackamas, Ore.) with 12 points, and senior Nash Keene (Aumsville, Ore.) with 10 points off the bench. Sophomore Jacob Kopra (Gresham, Ore.) added eight points and six rebounds, while junior Brelin Powell (Boise, Idaho) contributed with five points in his second career start.

A back-and-forth game over the opening five-plus minutes quickly turned into a George Fox double-digit lead, as the visiting Bruins used a 19-5 run over a span of nearly 10 minutes to grab an 18-point lead (35-17) with 4:43 left. Corban would fight back over the final four-plus minutes, as the Warriors used a closing 14-2 run to pull within six points (37-31) at the half following a lay-in by Cronrath to close out the scoring.

In the second half, Corban came out on fire hitting four straight shots that included a trifecta of three-pointer by Mauermann over the opening two minutes and 38 seconds en route to the host Warriors pulling within a single point (43-42) with 17:12 on the clock. Corban would grab its first lead of the second half at the 14:48 mark thanks to a Carter fast break lay-in, as the Warriors would then increase their lead to eight points (63-55) thanks to a three-pointer by Keene with 10:30 left in the game. Corban would hold the lead until the 5:59 mark when George Fox's Steven Wisely hit a three-pointer with just under six minutes left for a one-point Bruin lead (70-69). George Fox would increase its lead to nine points before Corban pulled to within five (77-72) after a Carter lay-in followed by a flagrant foul by GFU's Rich Smith that caused an automatic ejection due for the Bruins' big man. Unfortunately, Carter could not convert on his two free throws and then the Warriors missed a jumper in the paint leaving a potential four points on the floor. From that point on, George Fox used timely free throw shooting down the stretch that included six straight by Wisely over the final minute to secure the eight-point Bruin win (83-75).

George Fox was led in scoring by Wisely with a game-high 24 points on 6-for-17 shooting from the field to go along with a 10-for-11 showing at the free throw line. Three other Bruins – Smith, Cole Whitehurst, and Mike Taylor – contributed 18, 14, and 11 points respectively, while Whitehurst grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with Wisely's game-high eight assists and six steals.

As a team, Corban shot 30-for-68 (44.1%) from the field to go along with a 6-for-20 (30.0%) showing from beyond the three-point line that included a 6-for-12 (50.0%) performance from long distance in the second half to extend the program's national record to 797 straight games with at least one three-pointer made. George Fox combined to shoot 28-for-63 (44.4%) from the field and 5-for-15 (33.3%) from long distance, while the Warriors were a combined 9-for-16 (56.3%) at the free throw line compared to a 22-for-26 (84.6%) performance by George Fox at the charity stripe.

With tonight's result, Corban falls to 10-5 overall and George Fox improves to 2-6 overall. The Warriors will now embark on a much-needed break for the Christmas holiday before restarting the Cascade Collegiate Conference schedule on Thursday, December 30th, against the NAIA's No. 11-ranked Oregon Tech beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
