EUGENE, Ore. – Freshman
Jordan Carter (Salem, Ore.) scored a game and career-high tying 19 points in his Cascade Collegiate Conference debut, but it was not enough as Corban's men's basketball team fell to rival Northwest Christian, 69-58, Friday inside the Morse Event Center.
The first-year Warrior shot 7-for-14 from the field, while two other Corban players – junior
Erik Cronrath (Battle Ground, Wash.) and senior
Ian Logan (Aloha, Ore.) – also scored in double figures with 16 and 10 points respectively. Logan also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds to go along with Carter's eight boards and junior
Jonathan Ramirez's
(New Britain, Conn.) team-best two assists.
In the first half, Corban would grab a seven-point lead (20-13) with 5:51 showing on the clock following a lay-in by sophomore
Jacob Kopra (Gresham, Ore.). Over the next four minutes, Northwest Christian would use a 13-2 run en route to grabbing a six-point lead (28-22) after a Quentin Guidry jumper at the 1:59 mark. The visiting Warriors would close out the half on a 5-0 run to pull within a single point (28-27), as Ramirez made 3-out-of-4 free throws and Cronrath add another pair from the charity stripe in the final two minutes.
Over the opening five-plus minutes of the second half, Northwest Christian would use an 11-4 run en route to grabbing an eight-point lead (39-31) with 14:58 remaining in the game. Corban would pull to within three points (39-36) thanks to a 5-0 run that was capped with a Logan lay-in with 13:39 on the clock. Unfortunately, the Warriors would not get any closer as Northwest Chrisitian used a 23-9 run over a span of eight-plus minutes en route to grabbing its largest lead of the game (62-45) with just over four minutes to play. Corban would cut the host Beacons' lead into single digits (62-55) after a Carter three-pointer, but clutch free throw shooting down the stretch by Northwest Christian would seal the 11-point victory (69-58).
Guidry would lead Northwest Christian with a game-high tying 19 points on 8-for-17 shooting from the field, while Kellen Spicer added 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to go along with Cameron Marshall's 10-point showing for the Beacons. NCU's Brent McKee would add nine points and 10 rebounds, while Jordan Myers turned in a six-point, six-assist performance for the Beacons.
As a team, Corban shot 19-for-56 (33.9%) from the field that included a 2-for-12 (16.7%) showing from beyond the three-point arc and an 18-for-29 (62.1%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Northwest Christian was a combined 25-for-63 (39.7%) from the field, 2-for-18 (11.1%) from long distance, and 17-for-23 (73.9%) from the charity stripe.
With tonight's result, Corban falls to 7-2 overall and 0-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Northwest Christian even its win-loss record at 5-5 overall and 1-0 in league games. The Warriors will be back in action on Friday, December 10th, when they travel north to the state of Washington to take on The Evergreen State College beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the Greenhouse in Olympia.
