SALEM, Ore. – Corban's women's basketball team took the lead in the opening minute and never trailed throughout the game, as the Warriors earned a wire-to-wire win over the visiting Boxers of Pacific University of Oregon, 82-61, Tuesday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Sophomore
Tess Bennett (Sutherlin, Ore.) scored a game and career-high 23 points on 11-for-18 shooting from the field and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while juniors
Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) and
Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.) added 18 and 11 points respectively. Senior
Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) would register an eight-point, four-rebound, nine-assist night to go along with 18 points from the Warriors' bench that included a reserve-high six from sophomore
Melissa Jones (Klamath Falls, Ore.) in 12 minutes of action.
In the first half, Corban came out on fire hitting six of its first eight shots that included a trifecta of three-pointers en route to grabbing an early 13-point advantage (15-2). The Warriors would continue to add to their lead pushing it too as much as 23 points (35-12) with 5:49 remaining thanks to a free throw by sophomore
Ashlyn Roos (Salem, Ore.). Over the final five-plus minutes of the first half, Pacific would use a 10-2 run that cut Corban's lead to 15 points (37-22) at halftime thanks to a jumper by the Boxers' Paige Jensen in the final minute.
The second half would open with Corban increasing its lead to 22 points (51-29) thanks to a quick 14-7 start to the final twenty minutes. Steigleman would hit back-to-back three-pointers with the final one coming at the 3:40 mark, as the Warriors grabbed their largest lead of the game (78-49) before Pacific would attempt to cut into Corban's lead. Fortunately for the Warriors, their lead was too large and the home team settled for the 21-point win (82-61).
So far this season, Corban is unbeaten at home having outscored its opponents by an average of 27.33 points per game.
Pacific was led in scoring by Kristen Corrales with 19 points, as the starting guard knocked down five shots from beyond the three-point line. Jensen added 15 points and game-high 14 rebounds, while Kandice McArthur and two other Boxers – Brittany Anderson and Kaley Adams – chipped in with 7, 6, and 6 points respectively. Anderson would aid Jensen on the boards with 11 rebounds, while handing out a team-high tying three assists.
As a team, Corban shot 34-for-76 (44.7%) from the field to go along with a 7-for-16 (43.8%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 7-for-12 (58.3%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Pacific started the game 1-for-11 before settling for a combined 24-for-63 (38.1%) from the field. The Boxers would also shoot a combined 8-for-23 (34.8%) from long distance and 5-for-15 (33.3%) at the charity stripe.
With its third straight win, Corban evens its record at 4-4. Meanwhile, Pacific drops its third straight game to fall to 1-5 overall. The Warriors are back in action on Friday, December 10th, when they hit the road for a Cascade Collegiate Conference contest against The Evergreen State College beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Olympia, Washington.
