LA GRANDE, Ore. – Despite a team-high seven kills by junior
Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.), Corban's women's volleyball team opened its 2010 Cascade Collegiate Conference schedule with a three-set defeat at the hands of Eastern Oregon Friday night inside the Quinn Coliseum.
Only five players registered a kill for the Warriors, as sophomores
Chandra Baskoro (Gresham, Ore.) and
Jenny Harman (Salem, Ore.) added six kills each in Corban's 3-0 loss (15-25, 23-25, 16-25). Baskoro also registered a team-best 10 digs defensively, while sophomore
Karisa Calderon (Murrieta, Calif.) handed out 10 assists in running the Warriors' offense.
Set #1 was controlled by Eastern Oregon, as the host Mountaineers jumped to an early 7-0 lead before extending it to as much as 10 points (22-12). EOU would settle for a 10-point win (25-15) after a Warrior hitting error ended the opening set.
In the second and middle set, Corban would comeback from a five-point deficit (15-10) to take a two-point lead (21-19) following an 11-4 run that concluded with a Mountaineer hitting error. Unfortunately, the Warriors could not hold the lead as Eastern Oregon used a set-closing 6-3 run that was capped by another Corban hitting error.
The third and final set watched Corban take an early three-point lead (8-5) following a kill by freshman
Bailey Wold (Spokane, Wash.) before Eastern Oregon used a match-closing 20-12 run to take the opening conference match of the season in sweeping fashion.
Eastern Oregon's Jessica Lea led all players with 11 kills, while Irene Walters and Taylor Stewart added eight kills each. Emily Sampson handed out a match-high 16 assists, while Walters anchored the Mountaineers' defense with a match-high 11 digs.
Defensively, Corban would get a team-high three blocks from both Land and Calderon as Eastern Oregon's Lisa Steinbach registered a match-high four blocks that included three solo blocks.
With tonight's result, Corban drops its early season record to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Eastern Oregon improves to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in league matches. The Warriors will return to the court tomorrow night, Saturday, September 4th, against the NAIA's No. 16-ranked The College of Idaho beginning at 6:00 p.m. (Pacific Standard Time) in Caldwell, Idaho.
