Men's Basketball

Streak Extended to 800, but Warriors Fall in OT

BOX SCORE

PORTLAND, Ore. – Junior Jake Mauermann (Clackamas, Ore.) hit a game-tying three-pointer with 2.4 seconds left in regulation and freshman Jordan Carter (Salem, Ore.) added a team-high 24 points, but Corban's men's basketball team walked away with a bitter taste thanks to a heart-wrenching 87-85 loss in overtime to Warner Pacific Friday inside C.C. Perry Gym.

Despite the tough loss, the visiting Warriors made history when senior Ian Logan (Aloha, Ore.) knocked down the team's first three-pointer of the night at the 15:35 mark in the first half. With Logan's long distance shot from the wing, Corban extended its streak with at least one three-pointer made to a record 800 straight games, dating back to the 1987-88 season. In the process, the Warriors became the first school in history to make at least one three-pointer in 800 straight games with NCAA Division I member UNLV begin the next closest at 784-and-counting.

Along with Carter, Logan added 23 points to go along with 14 and 10 points respectively by junior Erik Cronrath (Battle Ground, Wash.) and Mauermann. On the boards, Carter pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and handed out a game-high seven assists nearly becoming the first Warrior to record a triple-double in the 52-year history of the program.

The first half began with Corban attempting to extend its national record three-point streak quickly, as the Warriors' first three shots came from beyond the arc with no avail. In the process, Warner Pacific would build a quick three-point lead (5-2) before Corban stormed back thanks to a 13-2 run that resulted in a 15-7 Warrior lead thanks to a sideline jumper by freshman Josiah Sebens (Bellingham, Wash.) with 14:02 on the clock. Corban would push its lead to as much as nine points (26-17) following a lay-in by senior Nash Keene (Aumsville, Ore.) at the 7:07 mark before Warner Pacific mounted a comeback that handed the host Knights a two-point lead (28-26) thanks to an 11-0 run over a span of nearly three minutes. Neither team would grab larger than a two-point lead over the final four minutes of the first half, as the score was knotted at 37-all at halftime.

A dog fight would ensue at the beginning of the second half, as both teams fought tooth and nail over the opening five minutes until Corban held a one-point lead (46-45) after a Carter jumper with 15:31 left. Over the next two minutes, Warner Pacific would build a seven-point lead (53-46) before Corban came back to knot the game at 57-57 after a pair of Carter free throws with just over nine minutes remaining. Warner Pacific would retake the lead and hold onto it until the final minute of regulation when Mauermann tied the score at 74-all after a pair of free throws with 48 seconds left. An old-fashion three-point play by Warner Pacific's Wester Moreland, a free throw by Carter, and another free throw by Moreland would give the host Knights a three-point lead (78-75) with five seconds remaining. Following a Corban time out, Mauermann sent the Warrior fans into a frenzy with his game-tying three-pointer with under three seconds left. An errant full-court pass by Warner Pacific that looked more like a desperation hail mary pass eluded everyone's out-stretched hands giving the Warriors the ball underneath their own basket with one final scoring opportunity for the victory. Unfortunately, a missed 10-foot jumper by Cronrath would send the game into an extra period.

In overtime, the score would be tied at 82-82 after a pair of Carter free throws with just over three minutes left. Another trip to the free line for both teams would see the score tied once again at 84-all before a back-door, alley-opp dunk by Moreland handed Warner Pacific the lead for good (86-84) with under a minute to play. Carter would knock down the visiting Warriors' final point via a free throw before Warner Pacific hit crucial free throws with nine seconds left and Corban could not knocked down a game-tying shot resulting in a hard-fought WPC victory.

Warner Pacific was led offensively by Moreland with game high totals of 30 points and 13 rebounds, while Traevone Bowie, Biniam Tadele, and Sean Gaines added 17, 13, and 11 points respectively. Tadele aided Moreland on the boards with 10 rebounds, while Nick Schultens handed out a team-high five assists for the Knights.

As a team, Corban shot a combined 29-for-58 (50.0%) from the field to go along with a 5-for-20 (25.0%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 22-for-37 (59.5%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Warner Pacific was a combined 29-for-70 (41.4%) from the field, 10-for-28 (35.7%) from long distance, and 19-for-34 (55.9%) at the charity stripe.

With tonight's result, Corban falls to 11-7 overall and 1-5 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific improves to 9-7 overall and 2-4 in league games. The Warriors will return to the hardwood tomorrow – Saturday, January 8th – against Concordia beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside Cavalier Gymnasium in Portland.
