Trio Nets Double Figure Point Totals in Loss

PORTLAND, Ore. – Hoping to secure its second four-game winning streak of the season was not in the cards for Corban's women's basketball team in a 72-59 loss to the Knights of Warner Pacific Friday inside C.C. Perry Gym despite three Warriors scoring in double figures.

Junior Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) scored a team-high 16 points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds, while sophomores Tess Bennett (Sutherlin, Ore.) and Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.) added 15 and 12 points respectively. Steigleman was aided on the boards by junior Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.) with seven rebounds, while senior Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) handed out a team-high four assists for the Warriors.

Following an 11-11 tie at the 15:37 mark of the first half, Warner Pacific used an 11-1 run over a span of seven-plus minutes en route to grabbing a 10-point advantage (22-12) with 8:25 on the clock. Corban would get as close as three points (30-27) after a Bennett lay-in with 71 seconds left, but had to settle for an eight-point half time deficit (35-27).

Warner Pacific would open the second half by quickly pushing its lead to 16 points (45-29) with just under 17 minutes left in the game, as Corban could not get an closer than five points (50-45) thanks to a jumper by sophomore Christy Mosier (Bend, Ore.) with 11:19 left. Over the final 10 minutes, Warner Pacific would push their lead to as much as 16 points (72-56) before settling for the 13-point win (72-59) to extend the Knights' winning streak to two games.

The host Knights were led offensively by Kelsey Mattsen's game-high 25 points, while three other Warner Pacific players – Layne Tucker, Cameryn Calhoun, and Katie Smith – added 12 points each in the win. Tucker led the Knights with six rebounds, while Calhoun handed out a game-high nine assists for the Knights.

As a team, Corban shot 23-for-63 (36.5%) from the field to go along with a 6-for-15 (40.0%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a combined 7-for-10 (70.0%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Warner Pacific was a combined 22-for-47 (46.8%) from the field, 6-for-12 (50.0%) from long distance, and 22-for-27 (81.5%) at the charity stripe.

With tonight's result, Corban falls to 9-7 overall and 4-2 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific improves to 8-7 overall and evens its league record at 3-3. The Warriors will return to the court tomorrow – Saturday, January 8th – against the NAIA's No. 15-ranked Cavaliers of Concordia beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. inside Cavalier Gymnasium in Portland.
