Sluggish Start Ends in Thrilling Five-Set Victory

BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore. – Despite a slugging start in the opening set by Corban's women's volleyball team, the Warriors came back to earn a thrilling five-set conference victory, 3-2 (16-25, 25-22, 25-20, 22-25, 15-10), over CCC rival Concordia Friday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

"Tonight's win was huge," said head coach Nels Norquist." Two years in a row, we've lost in five to Concordia at home. To finish one, even after losing the lead in the fourth, is big. I look forward to seeing if the girls can carry it onto tomorrow's match with Warner Pacific."

Junior Chandra Baskoro (Gresham, Ore.) led all players with a match-high 17 kills for the Warriors, while freshman Kayla Ping (Springfield, Ore.) and senior Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.) added 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Senior Megan Dees (Tehachapi, Calif.) and freshman Katherine Salness (Portland, Ore.) combined to hand out 48 assists, while sophomore libero Bethany Durre (Bend, Ore.) anchored Corban's defense with a team-best 29 digs. At the net, Land recorded a match-high five blocks to go along with double-doubles by Baskoro (17 kills & 17 digs) and Salness (20 assists & 13 digs).

In the opening set, Corban quickly fell behind by 11 points (15-4) before building a mini comeback to pull within seven points (23-15) thanks to an 11-7 run. Unfortunately, Concordia was too strong in Set #1 as the visiting Cavaliers cruised to a nine-point win (25-16).

Set #2 would be a dog-fight over the opening 34 combined points. With the score knotted at 17-all following a kill by Land, Corban used a 3-0 run to secure a 20-17 lead on a Concordia hitting error. The visiting Cavaliers would pull within a mere two points (24-22) on a kill by Aria Nojima before Corban closed out the second set on a Concordia attack error to knot the match at a set-apiece with a 25-22 victory.

The third set would see both teams battle to a 7-7 tie before Corban used another 3-0 run to secure a 10-7 advantage following a Baskoro kill. The host Warriors would never relinquish the lead pushing it to as much as six points (23-17) on another Baskoro kill. Concordia would pull within three points (23-20) thanks to a combo block by Lindsay Mangan and Clair Thiel forcing Corban to call a timeout. After the break, the host Warriors used a set-closing 2-0 run that included a Concordia service and hitting error en route to grabbing a 2-1 lead in sets following the 25-20 victory.

Set #4 would once again see Corban grab an early lead (11-7) on a Baskoro kill before Concordia battled back to take a one-point lead (20-19) thanks to a 13-9 run that concluded with a Warrior hitting error. Concordia would continue its run pushing the lead to three points (23-20) before settling for the three-point win (25-22) on a kill by Cassandra Koering that forced a fifth and deciding set.

The fifth and final set would see Corban jump out to a four-point lead (7-3) on a Cavalier hitting error before Concordia used a 6-2 run to pull within a single point (10-9). The host Warriors would catch fire over the final six combined points, as Corban closed out the match on a 5-1 run that included a pair of kills each by Land and Ping with the final point coming off the arm of Ping for the 15-10 come-from-behind victory.

Concordia was led offensively by Nojima and Thiel with 14 kills each, while Leslie Hanks and Koering added 11 kills apiece. Mangan would lead the Cavaliers' offense with a match-high 49 assists, while libero Aubrie Concannon tallied a match-high 32 digs from her defensive position. At the net, Koering registered a team-high four blocks to go along with Concordia's team total of 111 digs that included five different Cavaliers recording 13-or-more digs in the match.

With tonight's win, Corban snaps a five-match losing streak improving to 9-11 overall and 3-9 in Cascade Collegiate Conference matches. On the other hand, Concordia falls to 11-8 overall and evens its league record at 6-6.
