ASHLAND, Ore. – To begin its next-to-last road trip of the season, Corban's women's volleyball team fell to the NAIA's No. 16-ranked Raiders of Southern Oregon in three straight sets, 3-0 (16-25, 21-25, 15-25), Friday inside Bob Riehm Arena.
With tonight's result, Corban falls to 10-12 overall and 4-10 in Cascade Collegiate Conference matches. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon pushed its winning streak to eight matches en route to improving to 14-4 overall and 11-2 in league action.
The Warriors were led offensively by junior
Chandra Baskoro (Gresham, Ore.) and freshman
Kayla Ping (Springfield, Ore.) with six kills each, while freshman
Claire Bailey (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and senior
Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.) added five and four kills respectively. Corban's only other offensive came from sophomore
Olivia Shropshire (Gresham, Ore.) and freshman
Rebecca Shafer (Brea, Calif.), as the duo added three kills each. Senior
Megan Dees (Tehachapi, Calif.) handed out a team-high 14 assists, while sophomore libero
Bethany Durre (Bend, Ore.) anchored the Warriors' defense with a team-best eight digs to go along with Shropshire's team-leading three blocks.
In the opening set, Southern Oregon scored the first six points before extending its lead to as much as eight points (21-13) following a kill by Liz Madden. Corban would pull within seven points (21-14) thanks to a Baskoro kill only to watch the host Raiders use a 3-0 run en route to capturing Set #1 by a margin of nine points (25-16) on a set-closing kill by Natalie Scheller.
The second and middle set would once again see Southern Oregon pull out to a quick lead (7-3) before the visiting Warriors pulled to within two points (9-7) on back-to-back kills by Baskoro. Unfortunately, the host Raiders would quickly extended its margin to six points (15-9) on a combo block by Haley Fisko and Megan Bartling. Corban would fight back to within a single point (15-14) after two straight SOU hitting errors along with a Land service ace and another Raider attack miscue. Showing its nationally-ranked muscles, Southern Oregon would use a 4-1 run to grab a four-point lead (19-15) before pushing its lead to five points (24-19) on another blocks by Bartling and Scheller. Southern Oregon would need most of its five-point advantage en route to taking the second set by four points (25-21) on a set-closing Warrior hitting error.
Set #3 would belong to Southern Oregon from the opening service, as the Raiders grabbed a quick 10-point lead (13-3) on a Sarah Holgen kill. SOU would never relinquish its double-digit lead winning the final set by a score of 25-15 on a match-closing ace by Caryn Westrick.
Southern Oregon was led offensively by Holgen's match-high 13 kills, while Scheller and Madden added nine and eight kills respectively. Angela Spieker and Westrick would combined to hand out 36 assists with Spieker dishing out a match-high 19 assists, while Becky Johnstone and Holgen anchored the Raiders' defense with a match-high 13 digs apiece. Bartling would control the net for SOU with a match-high five blocks, while Spieker served up a match-high two service aces.
Corban will return to action tomorrow – Saturday, October 22nd – against the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Danny Miles Court in Klamath Falls.
