SALEM, Ore. – Corban's men's basketball team got at least two points from 10 of its players Friday, as the Warriors extended their winning streak to four games with a 73-51 victory over California Pacific Conference member Simpson inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
For the fourth straight game, senior
Erik Cronrath led all Warriors with 17 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 at the free throw line. Senior
James Green added 11 points and six rebounds, while junior
Jacob Kopra poured in 11 points off the Warriors' bench in a mere 15 minutes of action. Sophomores
Jordan Carter and
Josiah Sebens added nine points each for Corban, while Carter pulled down a game-high tying seven rebounds to go along with three assists each by Carter, Cronrath, and junior
Dustin Moore.
Tonight's victory pushed Corban's win-loss record to 4-2, while Simpson remains winless on the season at 0-6.
Out of the gate, the host Warriors quickly built a 14-point lead (21-7) thanks to a Kopra jumper with 8:35 remaining. Simpson would pull within 11 points (32-21) before Corban closed out the half on a 5-0 run that concluded with a jumper in the lane by senior
Geoffrey Martin just before the first half buzzer resulting in a 15-point lead (36-21) at intermission for the Warriors.
The second half would see Corban push its lead to double up the visiting Redhawks (46-23) on a jumper by Cronrath with 15:48 left. Over the next 10 minutes, the host Warriors would slowly build the lead to a game-high 35 points (71-36) after an old fashion three-point play by Green with 5:48 on the clock. Over the final five-plus minutes, Simpson would cut into the Warriors' lead but it was too little, too late as Corban settled for a 22-point victory (73-51).
Simpson would get a game-high 18 points and seven rebounds from former Western Mennonite star Travis Derochowski on 8-for-12 shooting from the field, while Bryan Castillo and a pair of Redhawks – Justin Phillips and Nick Dalby – added eight, seven, and seven points respectively. Castillo would handed out a game-high four assists for the Redhawks, while also grabbing five rebounds.
As a team, Corban shot a combined 27-for-61 (44.3%) from the field that included a 15-for-28 (53.6%) performance in the first half. The Warriors were also 6-for-20 (30.0%) from beyond the three-point line and 13-for-20 (65.0%) at the free throw line. On the other hand, Simpson was 19-for-61 (31.1%) from the field, 1-for-18 (5.6%) from long distance, and 12-for-15 (80.0%) at the charity stripe.
The Warriors will be back in action on Tuesday, November 22nd, against NCAA Division III member George Fox beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
