BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Four Warriors scored in double figures, as Corban's women's basketball team fell to fellow NAIA member California State University San Marcos, 77-74, Saturday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Senior
Katie Steigleman led all Warriors with 23 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field, while juniors
Tess Bennett and
Emily Tsugawa added 12 points each to go along with freshman Tara Vanweerdhuizen's 10-point effort. On the boards, Bennett grabbed a game-high seven rebounds to go along with a five-rebound effort by Vanweerdhuizen. Tsugawa would run the Warriors' offense with a game-high 10 assists for her second straight double-double, while also registering a game-high tying two steals.
Corban would open the game with a 14-8 run out of the gate en route to securing a six-point lead after a Vanweerdhuizen lay-in with 15:33 on the clock. Unfortunately, Cal State San Marcos would use a 7-0 run over a span of three-plus minutes en route to taking a one-point lead (15-14) before pushing the advantage to two points (18-16) on a Cassie Damyanovich three-pointer with 11:29 remaining. Cal State San Marcos would extend its lead to eight points (39-31) thanks to a jumper by Damyanovich with 21 ticks left before freshman
Danielle Vanderstoel knocked down a baseline jumper with five seconds left to cut the halftime deficit to six points (39-33).
CSUSM would come out and start the second half on a 11-3 run over the opening four-plus minutes en route to grabbing a game-high 14-point lead (50-39) on a Justine Chacon three-pointer with just under 16 minutes left. Over the next 12 minutes, Corban would slowly creep back into the game using a 29-18 run that knotted the game at 68-all on a Steigleman lay-in with 3:58 showing on the clock. Cal State San Marcos would knock down three straight shots from long distance to go along with four straight free throws by Corban making the score 74-72 in favor of the visiting Cougars with 2:29 left. After a turnover by CSUSM, Corban tied the game for the fifth time at 74-74 on a Bennett jumper in the paint with just over two minutes left. A lay-in by Sidney Dobner with 53 seconds left followed by a missed jumper by Corban and a free throw by Dobner with 19 ticks left would hand Cal State San Marcos a three-point advantage (77-74) forcing the host Warriors to call a timeout. Out of the break in action, Corban attempted to get off a three-point attempt but could not get enough room forcing the Warriors to burn their final timeout with two seconds left. An in-bounds play that set-up Steigleman for the potential game-tying three-pointer did not pan out, as the Warriors could not fend off the visiting Cougars' defense, as Steigleman's final shot hit off the side of the backboard as the horn sounded giving CSUSM the hard-fought three-point win.
Cal State San Marcos got nearly 86% of its scoring from Damyanovich, Chacon, and Dobner, as the trio scored a game-high 25 points, 21 points, and 20 points respectively. Damyanovich also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, while Dobner handed out a team-high six assists for the Cougars.
As a team, Corban shot a combined 28-for-56 (50.0%) from the field to go along with a 6-for-16 (37.5%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 12-for-21 (57.1%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Cal State San Marcos was 30-for-69 (43.5%) from the field, 8-for-15 (53.3%) from long range, and 9-for-17 (52.9%) at the charity stripe. The visiting Cougars took advantage of 16 offensive rebounds that led to 11 second chance points, while also holding the edge in points off turnovers (19-to-16).
With tonight's result, Corban falls to 1-2 on the season and Cal State San Marcos improves to 3-5. The Warriors will return to action on Thursday, November 24th, in the final game on the opening day of the Capital City/Bruce Henderson Memorial Holiday Tournament against Johnson & Wales beginning at approximately 8:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
