SALEM, Ore. – Sophomore
Jordan Carter scored a team-high 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the field, but it was not enough as Corban's men's basketball team fell in overtime, 68-64, to George Fox Tuesday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Carter's team-high scoring performance was aided by fellow sophomore
Josiah Sebens, who added 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the field that included a game-high four three-pointers. Senior
Jake Mauermann and junior
Jacob Kopra provided a combined 17 points off the Warriors' bench, as Mauermann was 3-for-4 from long range for nine points and Kopra added eight points and five rebounds. On the boards, senior
James Green pulled down a game-high 10 boards to go along with a team-best three assists by Carter.
Corban opened the game hitting a three-pointer just over a minute into the action thanks to Sebens' trifecta, as the host Warriors held George Fox scoreless over the opening four minutes. Unfortunately, Corban could not keep the visiting Bruins at bay as GFU used a 21-4 run over a span of 10-plus minutes en route to taking a 14-point lead (21-7) thanks to a three-pointer by Anthony Sanchez with 8:40 on the clock. Over the final eight-plus minutes, Corban stepped up its defensive pressure using a 19-1 run to close out the first half and grabbed a four-point halftime lead (26-22) when Mauermann knocked down a three-pointer from the wing as the buzzer sounded.
The second half would begin with both teams trading baskets before Corban secured a nine-point lead (43-34) on back-to-back free throws by Carter with just under 12 minutes remaining. Over the next 11 minutes, George Fox would use a 21-12 run to knot the game for only the second time at 55-all on a lay-in by Sean Atkins with 1:56 on the clock. A lay-in by senior
Erik Cronrath twenty seconds later would give Corban a slim two-point cushion (57-55), but George Fox got a pair of free throws from Sanchez with 84 seconds left to tie the score at 57-57. Corban had a chance to win the game in regulation, but a missed jumper by Carter with two seconds left would send the game into overtime.
In the extra period, the inside play of George Fox would get to Corban with the visiting Bruins knocking down three shots in the paint to go along with timely free throw shooting and solid defense. With the score knotted at 64-all after a Sebens three-pointer from the corner, George Fox scored the final four points on a jumper and two free throws from A.J. Grant for the final margin of victory (68-64).
George Fox was led offensively by Grant with a game-high 20 points that included 15 in the second half and overtime, while Atkins and Sanchez added 13 and 11 respectively. Mike Taylor chipped in with eight points before fouling out near the end of the second half, while Cam Rier pulled down a team-high nine rebounds for the Bruins.
As a team, Corban shot a combined 24-for-53 (45.3%) from the field to go along with a 10-for-22 (45.5%) performance from beyond the three-point line and a 6-for-12 (50.0%) showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, George Fox was 23-for-52 (44.2%) from the field, 6-for-17 (35.3%) from long distance, and 16-for-18 (88.9%) at the charity stripe.
With tonight's result, Corban falls to 4-3 overall and George Fox picks up its first win of the season improving to 1-2. The Warriors will return to action on Friday, November 25th, in the opening game of the 2011 Capital City Classic against NCAA Division II member Western Oregon beginning at 5:00 p.m. on the campus of Willamette University.
