VALLEJO, Calif. – Corban's men's basketball team opened the 2011-12 season with a 66-58 loss to the host Keelhaulers Friday at The California Maritime Academy Tournament despite a game-high 16 points by sophomore
Jordan Carter (Salem, Ore.).
With the season-opening loss, Corban falls to 0-1 and California Maritime Academy improves to 2-0.
Along with Carter, seniors
Erik Cronrath (Battle Ground, Wash.) and
James Green (Riverside, Calif.) added 13 points each to go along with a nine-point performance by senior
Jonathan Ramirez (New Britain, Conn.). Carter, who shot 7-for-11 from the field, also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to go along with a team-high tying two assists and a game-high three steals.
In the first half, Corban connected on only eight field goals but were able to stay in the game thanks to 11 free throws. After the opening twenty minutes, the visiting Warriors trailed by a mere two points (30-28).
The second half would be a different story for Corban, as the Warriors made nearly 46% of their shots (11-for-24). Unfortunately, Corban would see California Maritime connect on 56.5% (13-for-23) en route to scoring six more points than the Warriors and secured an eight-point win (66-58).
California Maritime was led in scoring by Isaiah Moore's team-high 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field, while Keven Campbell and Ryan Pearson added 12 and 10 points, respectively. On the boards, Pearson pulled down a team-best seven rebounds to go along with a three-assist showing by Moore and Campbell.
As a team, Corban shot a combined 19-for-46 (41.3%) from the field to go along with a 3-for-16 (18.8%) performance from beyond the three-point line and a 17-for-23 (73.9%) showing at the free throw line. On the other hand, the Keelhaulers were 26-for-58 (44.8%) from the field, 6-for-16 (37.5%) from long distance, and 8-for-15 (53.3%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will continue play at The California Maritime Academy Tournament tomorrow – Saturday, November 5th – against William Jessup beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Vallejo, California.
