C-Company Carries Warriors to Win Over WJU

SALEM, Ore. – Corban's men's basketball team jumped out to a 12-0 lead to open the game and then cruised to a 72-55 non-conference win over the visiting Warriors of William Jessup Saturday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

Senior Erik Cronrath and sophomore Jordan Carter both scored over 20 points with Cronrath netting a game-high 26 points that included 14 in the second half, while Carter torched the nets shooting 7-for-8 from the field en route to 21 points. Senior James Green was the only other Warrior in double figures with 10 points, while a quartet of Corban players – Cronrath, Green, senior Brelin Powell, and junior Jacob Kopra – pulled down a team-high six rebounds each to go along with a game-high five assists by Cronrath.

In the opening half, Corban would score the opening 12 points and did not let William Jessup on the scoreboard until the 14:26 mark when WJU's Jordan Wilson hit a jumper. Corban would continue to apply the offensive pressure grabbing a 17-point lead (24-7) on back-to-back free throws by Cronrath with 10:46 left. William Jessup could only get as close as eight points (26-18) on a Wilson lay-in with just over five minutes remaining, while Corban closed out the first half on a 14-10 run en route to securing a 12-point lead (40-28) at halftime.

The second half would begin with William Jessup using a 7-4 run to pull within nine points (44-35) before Corban used an 11-2 run over a span of nearly five minutes en route to grabbing a 19-point lead (56-37) on a nifty three-point play by senior Jake Mauermann with 10:56 on the clock. The host Warriors would continue to hold a double-digit lead pushing it to a game-high 22 points (72-50) on a lay-in by Kopra at the 3:16 mark, as Corban settled for a 17-point win (72-55).

William Jessup was led offensively by Wilson with 11 points off the bench, while Kevin Stanley was the only other WJU player in double figures with 10 points. On the boards, Wilson also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds to go along with four assists by Marqus Crawford.

As a team, Corban combined to shoot 26-for-53 (49.1%) from the field to go along with a 7-for-26 (26.9%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 13-for-14 (92.9%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, William Jessup was 21-for-55 (38.2%) from the field, 7-for-9 (77.8%) from long distance, and 6-for-10 (60.0%) at the charity stripe.

With tonight's win, Corban pushes its winning streak to three games improving to 8-6 overall. Meanwhile, William Jessup drops its third straight game in the state of Oregon falling to 3-10 on the season. The Warriors will be back in action on Monday, December 19th, against The Evergreen State College beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
