BOX SCORE ASHLAND, Ore. – Senior
Erik Cronrath tallied game-high totals of 24 points and nine rebounds, but it was not enough as Corban's men's basketball team closed out its CCC opening weekend with a 70-67 loss to Southern Oregon Saturday inside Bob Riehm Arena.
Cronrath, who shot 8-for-15 from the field and 8-for-10 at the free throw line, was aided offensively by sophomore
Jordan Carter's 19-point performance. Meanwhile, junior
Dustin Moore and senior
Jake Mauermann added seven and six points, respectively, to go along with a five-rebound performance by senior
James Green.
With tonight's result, Corban drops to 5-6 overall and 0-2 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon improves to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in league games.
After Southern Oregon grabbed a two-point lead (6-4), Corban used a 28-11 run over a span of seven-plus minutes to take a 17-point lead (32-15) on a old-fashion three-point play by senior
Geoffrey Martin with 9:01 remaining. The visiting Warriors would continue to hold a double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the first half before settling for an 11-point advantage (44-33) at halftime.
Corban would extend its lead to 16 points (55-39) in the opening four minutes of the second half before Southern Oregon used a 19-0 run to take a 58-55 lead following a Kyle Tedder three-pointer with 8:11 on the clock. Over the final eight-plus minutes, Corban could not get any closer than one point (68-67) on a lay-in by Cronrath with 15 seconds left. After a Warrior foul, SOU's Tedder missed a free throw only to have Scott Tiefenthaler grabbed a crucial offensive rebound. A Raider turnover would give the Warriors the ball back with nine seconds left, but unfortunately Corban could not convert on its jumper and Southern Oregon's Terriel Thomas would knock down the game's final two points via free throws for the final score of 73-70.
Southern Oregon was led offensively by Jordan Highland's 18 points, while three other Raiders – Eric Thompson, Tiefenthaler, and Thomas – scored in double figures with 15, 12, and 12 points respectively. On the boards, Highland grabbed a game-high tying nine rebounds to go along with a game-high tying four assists.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 22-for-53 (41.5%) from the field to go along with a 9-for-22 (40.9%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 14-for-22 (63.6%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Southern Oregon was 29-for-57 (50.9%) from the field, 7-for-16 (43.8%) from long distance, and 5-for-8 (62.5%) at the charity stripe.
The Warriors will return to action on Tuesday, December 6th, against New Hope Christian College beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Eugene.
