Steigleman Breaks Career Scoring Record in Win

BOX SCORE ASHLAND, Ore. – Senior Katie Steigleman became the all-time leading scorer in Corban women's basketball history on a first half three-pointer in a 71-62 conference victory over Southern Oregon Saturday inside Bob Riehm Arena.

With six minutes and twenty-four seconds left in the first half, Steigleman knocked down a three-pointer from the wing and surpassed her older sister, Jessica, as the program's all-time career scoring leader. The fourth-year Warrior ended the night hitting 11-of-23 shots en route to scoring a game-high 28 points, as she now has 1,766 career points.

Tonight's victory moves Corban to 5-4 overall and evens its Cascade Collegiate Conference record at 1-1. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon falls to 10-2 overall and 1-1 in league games.

Along with Steigleman, junior Tess Bennett added 14 points and freshman Tara Vanweerdhuizen chipped in with 12 points and a game-high tying 10 rebounds. Junior Emily Tsugawa also registered seven points and a game-high four assists for the victorious Warriors.

The two teams would trade leads over the opening three minutes until Corban used an 11-5 run over a span of five-plus minutes to take a seven-point lead (18-11) with 11:50 remaining. Southern Oregon would pull back within a single point (20-19) with an 8-2 run before the visiting Warriors expanded their lead to seven points (28-21) on Steigleman's historic three-pointer at the 6:25 mark. Over the final six-plus minutes, Corban would extend its lead to 16 points (45-29) thanks to a 17-8 run to close out the opening half.

Corban's run would continue in the opening minutes of the second half, as the Warriors pushed their lead to a game-high 19 points (50-31) on another Steigleman three-pointer with 18:32 left. Southern Oregon would then mount a comeback that brought the host Raiders within a single point (56-55) thanks to a 24-6 run over a span of 12-plus minutes. Fortuntately, Corban would never relinquish its lead closing out the game on a 15-8 run for the final margin of 71-62.

Southern Oregon was led offensively by Josi McDermott with a team-high 14 points, while Haley Newell and Angelica Cahee added 12 and 11 points respectively. Cassandra Tiggett would grab a game-high tying 10 rebounds for the Raiders, while Newell and RaTanya Newsome handed out a team-best two assists each.

As a team, Corban combined to shoot 29-for-70 (41.4%) from the field to go along with a 5-for-17 (29.4%) showing from beyond the three-point line and an 8-for-13 (61.5%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Southern Oregon was 24-for-78 (30.8%) from the field, 5-for-18 (27.8%) from long distance, and 9-for-18 (50.0%) at the charity stripe.

The Warriors will return to action on Saturday, December 10th, against the Warriors of William Jessup beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
