Steigleman Helps Lead Warriors to Key Victory

BOX SCORE

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Junior Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) led a quartet of Warriors in double figures with a game-high 23 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the field, as Corban's women's basketball team picked up an 82-80 win over Eastern Oregon Friday on Think Pink Night inside Quinn Coliseum.

Throughout the game, Corban did not trail by more than four points at any point and held the lead most of the time but it came down to the final two minutes before the game was decided. With the score tied at 77-77 with 1:46 remaining, senior Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) and Steigleman hit back-to-back jumpers en route to giving Corban a four-point lead (81-77) with 40 seconds left. Eastern Oregon would pull within a single point (81-80) thanks to a Samantha Flett three-pointer 18 seconds later. After a Mountaineer timeout, Corban turned the ball over and a foul was called sending Flett to the line for two free throws with seven ticks left on the clock. Fortunately for the Warriors, Flett missed both free throws and Steigleman grabbed the rebound before being fouled with three seconds left. Despite Steigleman making just one of two free throws, Eastern Oregon could not get off a good last-second shot helping Corban pick up the hard-fought two-point win (82-80).

Scoring-wise, Steigleman was aided by three other Warriors – Miller, sophomore Tess Bennett (Sutherlin, Ore.), and sophomore Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.) – with 18, 12, and 12 points respectively to go along with six-point efforts by senior reserve Rachel Harter (Grass Valley, Calif.) and junior Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.). On the boards, Buhler pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to go along with a game-high tying five assists by Bennett.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair over the opening five minutes, as Eastern Oregon grabbed its largest lead (8-4) after a Kyle Miller fast break jumper near the 15-minute mark. Corban would use a 14-4 run over a span of three minutes en route to grabbing a four-point lead (16-12) thanks to a fast break jumper in the paint by sophomore Christy Mosier (Bend, Ore.) at the 12:51 mark. The host Mountaineers would grab the lead once again (17-16) with 11:59 remaining before the visiting Warriors used a 9-0 run en route to securing an eight-point lead (25-17) following a Bennett jumper in the paint at the 8:56 mark. Eastern Oregon would secure its final lead of the opening half (30-28) thanks to a Miller three-pointer with six minutes left before Corban closed out the half on a 13-7 run en route to settling for a four-point half time lead (41-37).

Corban would open the second half scoring the first five points to grab a nine-point lead (46-37) after a Miller fast break jumper at the 19:05 mark. The visiting Warriors would push their lead to double digits (52-42) just over two minutes later thanks to another Miller jumper in the paint before Eastern Oregon used a 33-21 run over a span of 13-plus minutes to secure its final lead of the night (75-73) after back-to-back free throws by Flett with 2:57 on the clock. Tsugawa would hit a game-tying lay-in before knocking down two straight free throws to give Corban a slim two-point lead (77-75) with 2:02 left. EOU's Rosebud Guthrie tied the game for the final time at 77-all with a pair of free throws to set up the frantic final 106 seconds.

Eastern Oregon was led in scoring by Miller's 19 points, while Flett and Guthrie added 18 and 17 points respectively. On the boards, Flett and Guthrie pulled down a team-high seven rebounds each to go along with Flett's game-high tying five assists.

As a team, Corban shot a combined 32-for-56 (57.1%) from the field to go along with a 7-for-14 (50.0%) showing from beyond the three-point line and an 11-for-16 (68.8%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Eastern Oregon was a combined 30-for-68 (44.1%) from the field, 7-for-20 (35.0%) from long distance, and 13-for-20 (65.0%) at the charity stripe.

With tonight's result, Corban improves to 16-10 overall and 11-5 in Cascade Collegiate Conference games. Meanwhile, Eastern Oregon falls to 15-9 overall and 7-8 in league play. The Warriors will return to the court tomorrow night – Saturday, February 12th – against the Lady Coyotes of The College of Idaho beginning at 5:30 p.m. (MST) in Caldwell, Idaho.
