KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The magical run through the 2011 CCC playoffs for Corban's men's basketball team came to an end Saturday at Danny Miles Court, as the Warriors fell to the NAIA's No. 8-ranked and top-seeded Oregon Tech, 90-63.
Junior
Erik Cronrath (Battle Ground, Wash.) tied his career-high thanks to a game-high 28 points on 10-for-12 shooting from the field, while freshman
Jordan Carter (Salem, Ore.) was the only other Warrior in double figures with 19 points. Sophomore
Jacob Kopra (Gresham, Ore.) pulled down a team-high five rebounds off the bench, while Carter dished out a game-high tying four assists in the loss.
Oregon Tech came out of the locker room to the start the game and quickly built a nine-point lead (17-8) following a jumper by Scotty Riddle at the 14:20 mark. Corban would battle back to within three points (24-21) thanks to a 13-7 run over a span of five-plus minutes, as junior
Jonathan Ramirez (New Britain, Conn.) concluded the near comeback thanks to a jumper with 8:59 on the clock. The host Owls would build their lead back to seven points (32-25) thanks to a Joseph Foster jumper before the visiting Warriors closed the half on a 4-0 run to cut OIT's lead to a mere three points (32-29) at intermission.
The second half would begin with Corban getting as close as one point (34-33) thanks to a Carter jumper at the 18:52 mark. From that point on, Oregon Tech turned up its defensive pressure and slowly built the lead to a game-high 31 points (90-59) thanks to a 56-26 run that concluded with a pair of Alex Zerbach free throws with 43 seconds remaining. Corban would score the game's final four points on back-to-back jumpers by junior
Brelin Powell (Boise, Idaho) for the final deficit of 27 points (90-63).
Foster led a quarter of Hustlin' Owls in double-figures with 18 points, while Brent Johnson, Riddle, and Mihajlo Mahic added 16, 11, and 11 points respectively. Kyle Gomez pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and handed out a game-high tying four assists for Oregon Tech.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 21-for-49 (42.9%) from the field to go along with a 4-for-13 (30.8%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 17-for-23 (73.9%) performance from the free throw line. On the other hand, Oregon Tech was a combined 31-for-59 (52.5%) from the field, 10-for-26 (38.5%) from long distance, and 18-for-20 (90.0%) at the charity stripe.
With tonight's result, Corban falls to 18-14 overall and Oregon Tech improves to 28-4. The Warriors will have to play the waiting game this week to see if they will earn the right to play against Hope International for the West Region's automatic berth to the NCCAA National Tournament, while OIT will prepare to host Eastern Oregon in the CCC Championship Game on Tuesday, March 1st, at 7:00 p.m. in Klamath Falls.
