Keene Nets Team-High Versus Cavs of Concordia

BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore. – A 14-3 run that spanned over a seven-minute stretch between the first and second half was not what Corban's men's basketball team needed to see, as the visiting Cavaliers of Concordia earned a runaway 82-67 victory Friday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

Senior Nash Keene (Aumsville, Ore.) registered a team-high 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field that included knocking down 4-of-5 from long range. The senior co-captain was one of only two Warriors in double figures, as freshman Jordan Carter (Salem, Ore.) also added 11 points. Juniors Erik Cronrath (Battle Ground, Wash.) and Jake Mauermann (Clackamas, Ore.) chipped in with eight points each, while senior Ian Logan (Aloha, Ore.) added six points and a team-high seven rebounds. Senior Bryan Martin (Salem, Ore.) dished out a team-high four assists for the Warriors, while sophomore reserve Jacob Kopra (Gresham, Ore.) registered four rebounds and three assists. All 11 Warriors that saw time on the floor scored at least two points in tonight's CCC contest against the rival Cavaliers.

Concordia opened the game wanting to avenge its earlier loss in overtime, as the Cavaliers' Gage Aker quickly quieted the Warrior faithful when he teamed with Adam Herman on an alley-oop dunk three seconds into the game. Both teams traded buckets over the next ten minutes until Corban held a slim one-point lead (21-20) following a Cronrath lay-in with exactly ten minutes on the clock. Over the next three minutes, Concordia used a 10-2 run to secure a 31-23 lead at the 6:05 mark. The visiting Cavaliers would hold the lead for the remainder of the first half, as Concordia settled for a seven-point halftime advantage (39-32) after a Jourdan Sweeney fast break dunk capped the opening twenty minutes of scoring.

The second half would begin where the first half left off, as Concordia used an opening 12-3 run over the opening six-plus minutes en route to grabbing a 12-point lead (49-37) following a Kevan West lay-up at the 13:31 mark. Corban would get as close as nine points (74-65) after a Keene three-pointer at the 1:44 mark, but timely free throw shooting and easy buckets around the basket over the final 90 seconds would help lead Concordia to its 15-point win (82-67).

Concordia was led in scoring by Sweeney and Herman, who tallied a game-high 21 points each to go along with a 15-point effort from Aker and a 12-point showing by West. Sweeney also pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds for the visiting Cavaliers, while Aker posted eight rebounds and a game-high five assists to go along with his double-digit point total.

As a team, Corban shot 29-for-66 (43.9%) from the field to go along with an 8-for-25 (32.0%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 1-for-2 (50.0%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Concordia was a combined 32-for-63 (50.8%) from the field, 3-for-14 (21.4%) from long distance, and 15-for-22 (68.2%) at the charity stripe.

With tonight's result, Corban falls to 14-11 overall and 4-10 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Concordia improves to 9-15 overall and 3-10 in league games. The Warriors will return to the hardwood tomorrow – Saturday, February 5th – against the nationally-ranked and streaking Knights of Warner Pacific beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
