Warriors Break Assist Record Against Knights

BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore.
 – Dishing the rock has become a science in the game of basketball and Corban's women's basketball team became the top professor in program history in an 82-50 win over Warner Pacific Saturday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

As a team, the host Warriors combine to hand out 30 assists on 38 made field goals and broke the old single-game record of 28 that was accomplished three times with the last one coming against Cascade College during the 2005-06 season.

Corban's record-breaking performance was led by sophomore Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.) with a game-high 10 assists, while junior Katie Steigleman (Eugene, Ore.) led all scorers with 20 points on 10-for-18 shooting from the field. Two other Warriors – junior Becky Buhler (Clackamas, Ore.) and senior Jennesa Miller (Mica, Wash.) – also scored in double figures with 13 and 12 points respectively, while Tsugawa and fellow sophomore Tess Bennett (Sutherlin, Ore.) added eight points each in the victory.

The host Warriors would come out of the gate and thanks to a Buhler jumper and a Steigleman three-pointer, Corban would never look back building its lead to double digits (27-12) within the opening 12 minutes. The Warriors would hold an 18-point first half lead (41-23) following a lay-in by sophomore Miriam Slatter (Hamilton, New Zealand) than capped the opening twenty minutes of scoring and helped Corban take a commanding lead into the locker room.

In the second half, Corban opened on a 16-3 run over a span of just over four minutes en route to capturing a 31-point advantage (57-26) after a Buhler three-pointer. Not wanting to give the visiting Knights any breathing room, the host Warriors continued to apply pressure to Warner Pacific's throat building a game-high 38-point lead (73-35) thanks to a Slatter jumper in the paint at the 9:23 mark. Corban would never relinquish its 30-point cushion, as the Warriors settled for a 32-point blowout (82-50) to avenge its loss earlier this season to the Knights in Portland.

Warner Pacific was led in scoring by Miranda Holenstein's 12 points, while Cameryn Calhoun and three other Knights – Kelsey Mattsen, Adrienne Spierling, and Jessica Denmon – added eight and five points respectively. Katie Smith and Denmon led the Knights with five rebounds each, while Holenstein, Layne Tucker, and Calhoun dished out a team-best two assists each.

As a team, Corban shot 38-for-69 (55.1%) from the field to go along with a 5-for-15 (33.3%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 1-for-5 (20.0%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Warner Pacific was a combined 17-for-62 (27.4%) from the field, 1-for-14 (7.1%) from long distance, and 15-for-24 (62.5%) at the charity stripe.

With tonight's win, Corban improves to 15-10 overall and 10-5 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific falls to 13-11 overall and evens its league record at 7-7. The Warriors will return to the court on Friday, February 11th, against Eastern Oregon beginning at 5:30 p.m. inside Quinn Coliseum in La Grande.
