CCC Season Opens With Loss to Ranked Cavs

BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore. – In its 2011 Cascade Collegiate Conference opener, Corban's men's soccer team could not overcome a pair of first half goals by the NAIA's No. 14-ranked Cavaliers of Concordia falling 2-0 Tuesday at Warrior Field.

"We learned a lot from the match today, and we'll take that and move forward," said head coach Paul Meehan. "Good teams will punish you for mistakes and that is exactly what Concordia did to us. They are a very good side and showed why they are a ranked team. Despite the result, still plenty to feel good about and we will emerge as a better team due to our performance today."

Over the opening 45 minutes, Concordia showed why its is a nationally-ranked team scoring two goals in its first nine shots with the first coming at the 4:21 mark. The Cavaliers' Septi Danciu netted his team and conference-leading seventh goal of the season after collecting a throw-in from Tanner French and one-timing a shot into the back of the net for an early 1-0 Concordia lead.

In the waning seconds of the opening half, Danciu would strike again when he rifled home a rebound off the foot of Facundo Dipascuale at the 44:54 mark. Dipascuale would unleash a rocket shot in the final 10 seconds that was saved by Corban's keeper only to settle down at the awaiting foot of Danciu, who netted his second goal of the game and eighth of the season.

The second half would be a very evenly played game, as both teams combined for 18 shots with Concordia registering 11 to Corban's six. The visiting Cavaliers would have two ample opportunities to add to their two-goal lead only to have the Warriors' defense step up to the challenge and deny a pair of CU shots after they got past Corban's keeper.

Overall, Concordia would control the game's offensive flow outshooting Corban 20-to-7 that included an advantage in shots on goal, 11-to-3. The visiting Cavaliers would earn four more corner kick, 9-to-5, than the host Warriors yet Corban made 11 saves to Concordia's three.

Freshman goalkeeper Steven Mason (Santa Rosa, Calif.) registered a game and career-high tying nine saves to go along with a pair of team saves, while Concordia's net-minding duo of Humberto Soriano and Scott Gross combined for three saves with each playing 45 minutes between the pipes.

With today's result, Corban falls to 2-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Concordia pushes its season-opening winning streak to five games improving to 5-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in league games. The Warriors will return to the field on Saturday, September 17th, against The College of Idaho beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Caldwell, Idaho.
