Warriors Fall to Rival Cavaliers in Four Sets

PORTLAND, Ore. – Junior Chandra Baskoro (Gresham, Ore.) and freshman Claire Bailey (Santa Rosa, Calif.) combined for 25 kills, but it was not enough as Corban's women's volleyball team fell to the Cavaliers of Concordia in four sets, 3-1 (18-25, 17-25, 25-23, 18-25), Saturday inside Cavalier Gymnasium.

Baskoro registered a team-high 14 kills on 33 swings with a mere one attack error, while Bailey pounded down 11 kills on 21 swings with three hitting miscues. Senior Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.) and sophomore Olivia Shropshire (Gresham, Ore.) added seven and five kills respectively, while senior Megan Dees (Tehachapi, Calif.) posted a double-double with a team-best 25 assists and 14 digs. Defensively, sophomore libero Bethany Durre (Bend, Ore.) registered a team-high 19 digs to go along with a team, match, and career-high nine blocks by freshman Courtney Mulford (Upland, Calif.).

The opening set would see Corban jump out to a quick 2-0 lead thanks to kills by Dees and Baskoro before Concordia used a 6-3 run to secure its first lead of the night (6-5) following a Jane Moesche kill. The host Cavaliers would then use an 18-12 run to push their lead to a set-high seven points (24-17) thanks to a Cassandra Koering kill. Baskoro would pull the Warriors within six points (24-18), but CU's Lindsay Mangan end the set with a kill for the seven-point win (25-18).

Set #2 would be a back-and-forth battle over the opening 28 combined points until the score was knotted at 14-14 after a Concordia hitting error. The host Cavaliers would use a 3-0 run to pull ahead 17-14 before closing the second set out on an 8-3 run that ended on back-to-back kills by Clair Thiel for the eight-point win (25-17).

The third set would see Concordia jump out to a quick five-point advantage (6-1) before Corban used a 12-6 run to take a one-point lead (13-12) following a Land kill. Despite Concordia grabbing a three-point lead (16-13) following a Cavalier service ace, Corban battled back to tie the set at 19-19 thanks to a combo block by Baskoro and Mulford. The two teams would trade the lead until the score was even once again at 21-all thanks to a Baskoro kill. Another kill by Baskoro would hand the visiting Warriors a 22-21 advantage that Corban extended to three points (24-21) on a Dees service ace. Concordia would battle back to within a single point (24-23) before Bailey sent the match into another set with a set-closing kill that handed the Warriors the two-point win (25-23).

Set #4 was a see-saw battle over the opening 28 combined points, as Concordia used a 4-0 run en route to grabbing a four-point lead (18-14) after a Warrior hitting error. Even though Corban would pull within a single point (18-17) on a service ace by freshman Katherine Salness (Portland, Ore.), Concordia closed out the set on a 7-1 run to secure the victory (25-18) in four sets.

Moesche would lead all players with a match-high 15 kills for Concordia, while Thiel and Aria Nojima added 13 and 12 kills respectively. Mangan would handed out a match-high 48 assists for the Cavaliers, while Aubrie Concannon registered a match-high 22 digs from her back row position.

With tonight's result, Corban falls to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Concordia improves to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in league matches. The Warriors will return to the court on Friday, September 9th, against the Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon in a 7:00 p.m. contest inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
