BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Senior
Tiffany Land (Independence, Ore.) registered a team-high 11 kills on 23 swings with just one error, but it was not enough as Corban's women's volleyball team fell to Oregon Tech in four sets, 3-1 (25-27, 20-25, 25-21, 15-25), Friday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
Land was one of two Warriors to tally double digits in kills, as freshman
Claire Bailey (Santa Rosa, Calif.) put away 10 kills of her own to aid Corban's cause. Senior
Megan Dees (Tehachapi, Calif.) handed out a team-high 21 assists to go along with 13 digs for her seventh double-double this season. Sophomore libero
Bethany Durre (Bend, Ore.) led the Warrior defensive effort with a team-best 23 digs, while Land generated a team-high five blocks at the net for Corban.
The first set was closely contested through the first 29 points, as Corban moved within one point (15-14) of Oregon Tech behind Land's and Bailey's tandem stuff of Joey Parnell's attack attempt. The Hustlin' Owls responded with a quick 3-0 run to push the lead up to four, before the Warriors ground out a 10-5 run to take a 24-23 lead. Corban was unable to convert set point, and Oregon Tech captured the first frame with a closing 4-1 run fueled by two service aces for a 27-25 final margin.
The following set belonged to the visitors, as the Hustlin' Owls crafted a 7-1 run early in the second set to move ahead by six points (13-7). The Warriors responded with a 7-3 surge of their own, but a run-halting questionable call would swing the momentum back in Oregon Tech's favor. Corban could come no closer than three points to the Hustlin' Owl lead the rest of the way as Oregon Tech finished Set #2 with a five-point victory (25-20).
Corban came alive in the third set, building a three-point lead over the first 21 points (12-9) before unleashing a 7-0 run featuring a kill and two blocks by Land, as the senior middle blocker helped keep the run going with a solo stuff and a tandem block with sophomore
Olivia Shropshire (Gresham, Ore.). Oregon Tech would not buckle, cutting the Warrior lead down to three points (24-21), before Corban closed out the victory (25-21) on a Hustlin' Owl attack error.
Set #4 again belonged to Oregon Tech early, as Sarah Svedin fired three of her match-high five service aces during a set-opening 13-3 run favoring the Hustlin' Owls. The double digit lead proved too much to overcome, as Corban's efforts to rally were thwarted down the stretch. The Warriors moved within seven points of the lead, but could come no closer, as Oregon Tech closed out the set and the match with a ten-point triumph (25-15).
Two Hustlin' Owls reached double digits in kills, as Parnell garnered a match-high 12 kills to go with 11 kills for Mindy Nalder. Svedin tallied a match-high 31 assists in addition to her match-high five service aces, while libero Krystie Vea anchored the Oregon Tech defense with a match-high 24 digs.
With tonight's result, Corban falls to 8-8 overall, including a 2-6 record in CCC play. On the other hand, Oregon Tech improves to 9-6 overall and 3-5 in league action. The Warriors will conclude the weekend at home tomorrow– Saturday, October 1st – against the NAIA's No. 18-ranked Raiders of Southern Oregon University beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
