BOX SCORE
FRESNO, Calif. – After two-plus weeks since Corban's men's soccer team last stepped on the field, senior
Devin Chaney (Helena, Mt.) scored the Warriors' lone goal in the 22nd minute in a 2-1 loss to the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific Thursday at Ramirez Field.
"Fresno Pacific is a very strong side and tonight was a battle," said head coach Paul Meehan. "I'm very proud of how our guys responded to this challenge. We had our chances and battled right through to the final whistle. All the guys deserve credit, however goalkeeper
Steven Mason was outstanding. He single handedly saved 3 sure goals in the final 10 minutes and was clearly the man of the match. That said, it was a great team effort and positive step forward for our program."
The Warriors' fourth-year forward would team with junior
Tyler Hagen (Silverton, Ore.) at the 21:55 mark, as Hagen began the play making a run down the right side of the field before sending a pass to the awaiting foot of Chaney. Without hesitation, Chaney drove home his second goal of the season and in the process took over the team lead in points with five.
Fresno Pacific would get on the board first when Paul Islas teamed with Sunbird teammate Fabricio Nazare for his third goal of the season in the sixth minute en route to FPU taking an early one-goal lead.
After Chaney's goal nearly 17 minutes later that knotted the score at 1-1, neither team would capitalize on their scoring opportunities until the final ten minutes of the game.
In the 82nd minute, freshman forward
Josh Hamilton had a chance to put the visiting Warriors ahead when his second shot of the game richocheted off the cross bar. Fortunately for Hamilton, the ball came right back to him only to have his return shot sail high about Fresno Pacific's goal at the 81:14 mark.
Less than one minute later, FPU's Islas would work his way through multiple Corban defenders before dropping a pass to Bruno Pessoa in the box for the eventual game-winning goal. Pessoa's third goal of the season would come at the 82:04 mark, as Fresno Pacific's defense stepped up the challenge over the final seven-plus minutes en route to securing the one-goal victory.
Freshman goalkeeper
Steven Mason (Santa Rosa, Calif.) saw his first action between the pipes for the Warriors this season making a game-high nine saves, while Fresno Pacific's Andre Costa needed to make only one save to pick up the win.
Overall, Fresno Pacific controlled the offensive flow of the game out shooting Corban by 18 (27-9) that included a 20-3 margin over the game's final 45 minutes. The host Sunbirds earned all nine of the game's corner kick, while also unleashing nine more shots on goal (11-2) than the visiting Warriors.
With tonight's result, Corban falls to 1-2 overall with one more non-conference game remaining and Fresno Pacific evens its 2011 record at 2-2. The Warriors will close out their California road trip on Saturday, September 10th, against California Pacific Conference member Simpson beginning at 4:00 p.m. in Redding.
