SALEM, Ore. – Senior
Erik Cronrath scored a career and game-high 30 points on 10-for-14 shooting from the field to go along with a 10-for-12 showing at the free throw line, but it was not enough as Corban's men's basketball team fell to Concordia, 80-70, Saturday inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
At the midway point of the Cascade Collegiate Conference season, Corban sits at 11-10 overall and 3-6 in CCC games. Meanwhile, Concordia is 11-8 overall and 4-5 in league contests.
Along with Cronrath's game-high scoring performance, the 6-foot-8 forward also pulled down a game-high tying 11 rebounds and was joined in the double-digit scoring category by sophomore
Jordan Carter with 13 points. Senior
Jonathan Ramirez played the final 11 minutes of game and tallied eight points off the Warriors' bench, while juniors
Jacob Kopra and
Dustin Moore added seven and six points, respectively. On the boards, Cronrath was aided by senior
James Green with five rebounds to go along with a game-high seven assists by Carter.
Corban would open the game on a 7-2 run over the first three minutes before Concordia used a 7-0 run over a span of three minutes en route to securing a two-point lead (9-2) on a lay-in by Adam Herman at the 14:46 mark. The visiting Cavaliers would continue to apply offensive pressure, as Concordia built its lead to six points (20-14) thanks to a jumper by Herman with 11:30 on the clock. A 5-0 run would pull Corban within a single point (20-19) on a three-pointer by Carter with 10:35 left, as the host Warriors regained the lead (23-22) just over 90 seconds later on a jumper by Carter with just under nine minutes remaining. Concordia would then use a 13-7 run over a span of six minutes en route to securing another six-point lead (35-29) on back-to-back free throws by Herman with exactly three minutes on the clock. The visiting Cavaliers would continue to hold the lead increasing it to seven points (38-31) at halftime thanks to a three-pointer by Drew Preuninger for the final points of the opening twenty minutes.
The second half would begin with Concordia slowly pushing its lead to a game-high 16 points (60-44) at the 9:43 mark thanks to a Herman lay-in. Over the next seven minutes, Corban would cut into Concordia's lead pulling the Warriors within nine points (72-63) on a jumper by Ramirez in the paint with exactly two minutes left. Unfortunately, timely free throw shooting by Concordia would seal the win for the visiting Cavaliers as CU went 6-for-8 at the charity stripe to securing the 10-point win (80-70).
Concordia was led offensively by Herman with 28 points on 8-for-9 shooting from the floor to go along with a 11-for-13 showing at the free throw line, while Jourdan Sweeney and Kevan West added 16 and 13 points, respectively. Sweeney would tie for the lead among all players in rebounds with 11, while Herman registered a double-double thanks to a 10-rebound effort to go along with a five-assist performance by Anthony Holton.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 26-for-63 (41.3%) from the field to go along with a 5-for-26 (19.2%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 13-for-17 (76.5%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Concordia was 27-for-51 (52.9%) from the field that included a 12-for-20 (60.0%) showing in the second half. The Cavaliers were also 5-for-11 (45.5%) from long distance and 21-for-31 (67.7%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will return to action on Friday, January 20th, against nationally-ranked Northwest beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside the NU Pavilion in Kirkland, Washington.
