PARKLAND, Wash. – Corban's women's basketball team kicked off the New Year with a 74-51 win over NCAA Division III member Pacific Lutheran Monday inside the Olsen Auditorium, as the Warriors pushed their winning streak to a season-high six games.
With tonight's win, Corban improves to 10-4 overall and Pacific Lutheran falls to 4-6 on the season.
For the second game in a row, freshman Tara Vanweerdhuizen led Corban in both points and rebounds with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Meanwhile, three other Warriors – senior
Shayla Fetters, freshman
Elizabeth Downs, and junior
Emily Tsugawa – also scored in double figures with 11, 11, and 10 points, respectively, while junior
Tess Bennett provided an eight-point, nine-rebound performance in the win. Tsugawa also handed out a game-high 10 assists, while Vanweerdhuizen tied the school-record for blocked shots in a single game with a game-high seven.
The game would open with a back-and-forth battle until Pacific Lutheran held a four-point lead (12-8) on a Shelly Kilcup lay-in with 10:09 on the clock. Over the next two minutes, Corban would use a 7-0 run en route to securing a three-point lead (15-12) on a Bennett jumper with just over eight minutes remaining. The host Lutes would use a 15-7 run over a span of four minutes to take a five-point lead (27-22) thanks to a Katelyn Smith old fashion three-point play with 4:07 left. Corban would then take control for good closing out the first half on a 16-3 run that resulted in an eight-point (38-30) halftime lead with freshman
Katherine Salness hitting the final two points via a fast-break lay-in.
Pacific Lutheran would open the second half on a 7-0 run to pull within a single point (38-37) on back-to-back Smith free throws with 17:43 left in the game. Over the next five-plus minutes, Corban would use an 18-3 run to grab a 16-point lead (56-40) on a lay-in by junior
Christy Mosier with just over 12 minutes left. The visiting Warriors would then push their lead to 20 points (62-42) on a jumper by senior
Becky Buhler with 9:39 on the clock, as Corban held a 20-plus point lead for the remainder of the game settling for the 23-point win (74-51) on a three-pointer by sophomore
Alison Evans for the final points of the night.
Kilcup led all players with a game-high 21 points on 8-for-19 shooting from the field for Pacific Lutheran, while Smith was the only other Lute in double figures with 10 points. Smith and Chrissy Swope grabbed a team-high seven rebounds each for PLU, while Mackenzie Bieker dished out a team-best three assists.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 33-for-66 (50.0%) from the field to go along with a 4-for-18 (22.2%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 4-for-8 (50.0%) performance at the free throw line. On the other hand, Pacific Lutheran was 18-for-68 (26.5%) from the field, 6-for-16 (37.5%) from long distance, and 9-for-13 (69.2%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will play Cascade Collegiate Conference opponents for the remainder of the season beginning on Friday, January 6th, against The College of Idaho starting at 4:30 p.m. (Pacific Standard Time) inside the J.A. Albertson Activities Center in Caldwell, Idaho.
