EUGENE, Ore. – Four Warriors scored in double figures led by junior
Jacob Kopra's 15-point, 14-rebound effort, as Corban's men's basketball led wire-to-wire in a 63-54 victory over Cascade Collegiate Conference rival Northwest Christian Friday inside the Morse Event Center.
With tonight's win, Corban improves to 13-11 overall and 5-7 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Northwest Christian falls to 10-14 overall and 3-9 in league games.
Along with Kopra's game-high scoring performance, three other Warriors – sophomore
Jordan Carter, senior
Erik Cronrath, and senior
James Green – each scored in double figures with 14, 13, and 10 points, respectively. On the boards, Kopra was aided by Carter with eight rebounds and junior
Dustin Moore with seven. Carter and Moore also handed out a game-high tying three assists each, while senior
Jake Mauermann chipped in with six points and a game-high six steals.
In a battle to remain in the conference playoff picture, Corban scored the first nine points and held the host Beacons without a point over the opening three-and-a-half minutes. The visiting Warriors would build their lead to as much as 14 points (18-4) on a lay-in by Green with 12:45 on the clock. Northwest Christian would battle back to within three points (24-21) on a David Vermilyea lay-in at the 7:27 mark before Corban closed out the first half on an 8-3 run en route to taking an eight-point advantage (32-24) into the locker room.
The second half would begin with Corban quickly pushing its lead back to double digits (36-24) thanks to a Cronrath lay-in at the 19:00 mark. Northwest Christian would get as close as seven points on three different occasions with the final one coming at 59-52 with 44 seconds left, as the visiting Warriors settled for the nine-point win (63-54).
Northwest Christian was led offensively by Brian Hampton with 11 points off the Beacons' bench, while Brody McGowan and Jordan Buhler added eight and seven points, respectively. Despite the rebounding difference of 49-27 against Northwest Christian, Buhler pulled down a team-high four boards to go along with a team-best three assists by Buhler, Jordan Myers, and Brian Mitchell.
As a team, Corban combined to shoot 19-for-58 (32.8%) from the field to go along with a 5-for-20 (25.0%) showing from beyond the three-point line and a 20-for-25 (80.0%) performance at the free throw line that included a 9-for-10 clip by Cronrath and a perfect 6-for-6 from Carter. On the other hand, Northwest Christian was 23-for-54 (42.6%) from the field, 3-for-17 (17.6%) from long distance, and 5-for-12 (41.7%) at the charity stripe.
Corban will return to the hardwood on Friday, February 3rd, against the visiting Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center in Salem.
