Warriors Host Block Party on Senior Night Against OIT

BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore. – On Senior Night, Corban's women's volleyball team hosted a "block party" in honor of a pair of seniors that were playing their final match in front of the home crowd Saturday against the Hustlin' Owls of Oregon Tech inside the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.

Thanks to a combined 10.0 blocks by the Warriors, Corban put a stop to its nine-match losing streak with a three-set sweep of the Owls, 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-22), behind three different Warriors – junior Jenny Harman, junior Olivia Shropshire, and sophomore Courtney Mulford – with five blocks each.

Offensively, senior Chandra Teague registered a match-high 11 kills to go along with a team-best 16 digs. Teague was aided by sophomore Claire Bailey with 10 kills, while sophomore setter Katherine Salness handed out a match-high 33 assists to go along with 13 digs. Freshman libero Kiersten Hilt helped anchored the Warriors' defense with 10 digs, while junior Alex Matulewicz served up a match-high five aces.

The opening set would see Oregon Tech jump out to a quick 2-0 lead before Corban used a 12-2 run that resulted in an eight-point lead (12-4) on a combo block by Shropshire and Mulford. The Warriors would continue to apply the pressure never relinquishing the lead and held a seven-point advantage (20-13) before Oregon Tech used its second and final timeout of the set. Following the break in action, Oregon Tech began to mount a comeback pulling within three points (23-20) thanks to a 7-3 run that was capped by a hitting error by Corban. Fortunately for the host Warriors, the lead was too much for OIT to overcome as Corban got kills from Teague and Mulford to close out Set #1 with the 25-21 victory.

Set #2 would see Corban break a 4-4 tie with a 5-2 run that resulted in a three-point lead (9-6) on a OIT ball handling error. Oregon Tech would pull within a single point (11-10) before Corban used a 9-3 run to pull ahead by seven points (20-13) on a OIT service error. Oregon Tech would regroup once again and pull within four points (20-16) on a kill by Julie Pfeifer before Corban used a quick 3-0 run to pull ahead by seven points (23-16) on another combo block by Salness and Shropshire. Despite some miscues by the Warriors over the final points, Corban would get a kill from Teague and set-ending solo block by Harman for the 25-19 victory.

After a 10-minute break between sets to honor Corban's seniors Teague and Karisa Legg, Oregon Tech came out and opened the third set with new life before the host Warriors got three kills in four points by Teague to take a 5-2 lead. The visiting Owls would fight tooth-and-nail with Corban breaking a 12-12 tie with a 3-0 run that gave OIT a 15-12 lead on a combo block by Jen Saltenberger and Kara Young. Unfortunately for OIT, Corban was not going to go quietly into the night as the Warriors stormed back to take a four-point lead (23-19) thanks to an 11-7 run that concluded with a kill by Mulford. Oregon Tech would pull within two points (24-22) on a Young kill only to have the match come to an end thanks to a kill by Bailey for the 25-22 victory and a three-set sweep.

Oregon Tech was led offensively by Kristen Walters with 10 kills, while Young and Saltenberger added nine and six kills, respectively. The setting duo of Kayleigh Whelchel and Megan Holland would combine to hand out 31 assists with Whelchel recording a team-high 18 to go along with a match-high 24-dig performance by Marie Baumann.

Corban will begin the final three-match stretch of its season on Friday, October 26th, against conference rival Northwest Christian beginning at 7:00 p.m. inside the Morse Event Center in Eugene.
