Warriors Fall in Four Sets to Rival Northwest Christian

EUGENE, Ore. – In its lone match of the week, Corban's women's volleyball team fell to Cascade Collegiate Conference rival Northwest Christian in four sets, 3-1 (22-25, 22-25, 25-21, 17-25), Friday inside the Morse Event Center despite a team-high 12 kills by senior Chandra Teague.

With tonight's result, Corban falls to 4-18 overall and 2-14 in CCC matches. Meanwhile, Northwest Christian improves to 16-11 overall and the Beacons evened their conference record at 8-8 to remain in the playoff picture with two matches left in the regular season.

Along with Teague's offensive performance, sophomore Claire Bailey and Courtney Mulford added nine and seven kills, respectively. Sophomore setter Katherine Salness ran the Warriors' offense with a match-high 32 assists to go along with a match-high 17 digs by freshman libero Kiersten Hilt. At the net, junior Jenny Harman registered a match-high tying four blocks with three Warriors – junior Alex Matulewicz, Salness, and freshman Hannah Flores – serving up a team-high tying two aces each.

The opening set would see Corban build a three-point lead (4-1) before Northwest Christian used a 12-4 run en route to securing a 13-8 lead on a combo block by Maren Mansfield and Chandler Gabrio. The visiting Warriors would not go quietly into the night, as Corban battled back to tie Set #1 at 16-all thanks to an 8-3 run that concluded with two straight NCU attack errors. The opening set would be tied for the last time at 17-17 before Northwest Christian used a 7-2 run to secure its first set-point. Corban would battle back within two points (24-22) before Mansfield ended Set #1 with a kill for a 25-22 victory for the host Beacons.

Set #2 would be a battle over the opening 32 combined points until Northwest Christian broke a 16-16 tie with a 4-0 run that resulted in a 20-16 lead for the Beacons on another Mansfield kill. Corban would battle back within a single point (23-22) on a kill  by Teague before Northwest Christian scored the final two points for another 25-22 victory.

The third set would see both teams go back-and-forth over the opening 24 combined points until Corban broke a 12-12 tie with a 6-1 run that resulted in an 18-13 lead for the visiting Warriors on a NCU hitting error. Northwest Christian would battle back to tie the set at 20-all before Corban used a 3-0 run that included a pair of kills by Teague and another point-recording swing by Harman for a 23-20 Warrior lead. Despite a kill by Northwest Christian, Corban would score the final two points that included a set-closing kill by Mulford for the 25-21 victory.

In the fourth and final set, Northwest Christian would quickly build a four-point lead (5-1) before extending it to eight points (13-5) on a combo block by Tami Brown and Chelsea McGowan. Corban would get as close as four points (17-13) on a combo block by Teague and Harman before Northwest Christian extended its lead to an eight-point win (25-17) on a kill by Brown for the four-set victory.

NCU's Brown would lead all players with 18 kills, while Mansfield and Janel Fetters added 10 and nine kills, respectively. The setting duo of Cori Wallace and Alyssa Dorr would combine to hand out 47 assists with Wallace dishing out a team-best 26, while Dana McGowen anchored the Beacons' defense with 16 digs to go along with a match-high tying four blocks by Brown.

Corban will return to action on Friday, November 2nd, beginning its final weekend of the regular season against the Geoducks of The Evergreen State College beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Olympia, Washington.
