BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – In a rematch of the Cascade Collegiate Conference opener in Portland for both teams earlier this season, Corban's men's soccer team battled with the NAIA's No. 18-ranked Cavaliers of Concordia before falling 1-0 Tuesday afternoon on Warrior Field.
Today's result drops Corban to 4-5-3 overall and 3-4-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Concordia pushes its league-high winning streak to eight games improving to 9-2-1 overall and a perfect 8-0-0 in CCC games.
After battling in a 2-1 loss earlier this season in Portland, Corban opened the second half of the conference schedule by becoming the first team so far this season to hold Concordia to a single goal in league play and also became the first team since mid-September to hold the Cavaliers scoreless in the first half.
“I'm proud of our performance," said head coach Paul Meehan. "The guys did everything I asked of them. We will move on and learn from today's game, but I cannot emphasize enough how well I felt we played.”
Corban had a prime scoring opportunity in the second minute when senior
Tyler Hagen earned a corner kick along the near sideline and sent a perfectly placed pass into a crowd of people. A Concordia defender would head the ball away from the goal only to have it land at the feet of senior
Juan Castillo, who rocketed a shot off a Cavalier defender where sophomore
Arsinio Walker was waiting. Without hesitation, Walker ripped a low shot directly into the awaiting arms of Concordia's keeper for the save at the 2:06 mark to keep the game scoreless.
Over the final 43-plus minutes of the first half, Corban would get two more scoring chances when sophomore
Josh Hamilton broke free from Concordia's defense only to have the Cavaliers' net-minder come up with a pair of huge saves in the 17th and 43rd minutes.
Both teams would go into halftime scoreless, as Corban registered five more shots (13-to-8) than Concordia that included a 6-to-5 advantage in shots on goal.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Concordia would be awarded a penalty kick after a Corban defense was whistled for a hand ball just inside the 18-yard box. Similar to the first CCC game of the season between these teams, Concordia's Septi Danciu would step to the penalty circle and drilled a shot past Corban's diving keeper for a 1-0 Cavalier lead at the 47:41 mark. Danciu's goal would be his team-leading ninth of the season.
Just under 10 minutes later, Corban would have a chance to tie the game when Walker broke free from Concordia's defense and unleashed a shot that was saved by the Cavaliers' keeper as the visitors held onto the slim one-goal lead.
In the 60th minute, Castillo would have his chance to tie the game when he dribbled through a wall of CU defenders before finding himself wide-open at the top of the 18-yard box. With a quick dribble to his right foot, Castillo ripped a low shot towards the goal only to have Concordia's goalie come up with another big save to keep the Warriors off the scoreboard.
Corban would have one last chance to tie the game in the 81st minute when sophomore
Daniel Fredrickson blasted a left-footed shot from 30 yards out that got by Concordia's defense only to find the awaiting arms of CU's goalkeeper for his ninth save of the afternoon.
Sophomore net-minder
Steven Mason would play all 90 minutes for Corban registering seven saves, while Concordia's Scott Gross made his first start between the pipes for the Cavaliers and registered a game and career-high 10 saves. The effort by Gross was the first time since the 2008 season that a Concordia goalkeeper registered double-digit saves.
Offensively, Corban registered six more shots (19-to-13) than Concordia that included a 10-to-8 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams would earn seven corner kicks, while Concordia was whistled for six more fouls (15-to-9) than Corban with the Warriors committing only three fouls in the second half.
Corban will return to action on Saturday, October 13th, when they travel to The College of Idaho for a 3:00 p.m. contest at Simplot Stadium in Caldwell, Idaho. Meanwhile, Concordia will put its eight-game winning streak on the line Saturday against the conference's No. 2 team Evergreen beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Olympia, Washington.
